Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Modify, hack a couch to fit over a RV wheel well?

Hello people.  Im new here..

Last time I pulled my toy-hauler to Colorado, I swore I would replace the fold down couch/bed with something more comfortable since I don't sleep on it. But after visualizing how I would achieve mounting a comfortable leather couch against this wall. I'm starting to doubt I can do it. Yes, it wouldn't allow two bikes.

As you can see.. I would have to cut out the back bottom board of the couch to clear the wheel well (14" tall, 9" deep, 76" long) , so I could slide it back against the wall.
I'm no furniture builder, but that board is like the backbone of the couch.. The seat and back rest springs are mounted to that board. Unless that board is more than 15" tall allowing me to notch it, The entire couch would fall apart when I removed the bottom back board..

Am I correct about my assumptions? Would I ever find a couch with that boards top edge taller than 15"? Or is there a type of couch construction I should be looking for which would allow this modification notch as I'm not skilled enough to build the entire couch from scratch..

Thanks!

No one knows if I can modify a couch to fit over the wheel well?

Or if something exists to place over my fold down couch to make it bearable?

With regards to "covering" your fold-down couch, I'd look into something that could be placed on it in the way of cushions to help you out.  If you were using the couch for sleeping, I'd suggest "egg-crate" foam cushions.  However, you might also be able to get some of it to cover and then place on the couch.  Below is a link to what egg-crate foam would look like.

Egg-Crate Cushion Material

As for "hacking" a couch to fit, I doubt that many would want to damage a couch to achieve such an arrangement.

Is this something you can take to a welding shop and have them manufacture a bracket that allow you to make the notch w/o compromising the strength you need? Notch it and screw it to the wall. ;<)

I think I would build a platform ... cut the legs off a real loveseat.. and set it there.. Not much you can do with particle board and foam..

Got a better picture?

No new pictures now.   I'm using the hauler for storage as I rebuild my cummins van.

I like your platform idea.  But it would need to be 14" tall.

I'm convinced a couch exits who's type of construction combined with the suggestions given here could become a reality..

Its been a while, but It took me this long to find a suitable couch to hack.. Its a nice comfortable leather couch in hunter green.

Its been a challenge retaining the tension, but I have the new couch back board mounted 8" back.  I will have to raise the couch 2" to push it back the 8", but I think Iv got it almost whipped.

View from bottom.
