Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Can you all please tell me the least expensive and best way for me to transfer my Dish Satellite to our camper? We will be full timers plus we are still under contract with Dish. We have our dish that is on the house...can we just use that? We also have our DVRs we have been using in the house. Also, our trailer only comes wired for cable not satellite, will we need different cabling? Are there cheaper portable systems that arent $1000 that will work?

We use a Tailgator with dish, but I don't believe you can DVR with it without paying more for the upgraded receiver. As far ar the cabling, for a system like the tailgator it needs a dedicated cable because it receives its power from the receiver.
So with the Tailgater you cant use the DVR cable box I currently have in the house? Ive become so addicted to DVR and no commercials

Also, did you do the wiring your self for it? Does it really find your satellites as easy as the video shows?

I also have the Dish Network 211 K receiver. I bought an external USB hard drive and they activated it for 50 bucks. Now I have a DVR with no additional monthly charges. The bigger hard drive you buy, the bigger the capacity of your DVR.
Dish network pay as you go.

We use an AT&T mifi on our family share plan for internet. $180 per month for 3 devices (2 phones and the mifi unit) and it includes 15gb of data to share. We also have Dish w/ the 411K reciever. Since you already have the receivers and the dish why not just get a tripod to mount it on and go with that, many folks do. They sell some handy devices that will help you aim them and can be set up pretty quickly with a little practice. We had a tailgator and yes, it is very easy to use but does have some drawbacks. You can only use the 411K receiver with them so if yours is different then you would need to buy a new one. They also can only look at one satellite at a time so you cannot watch one channel in the bedroom and another in the living room. We also have a external hard drive serving as our DVR and it works perfect, others might be able to correct me but when we bought our 211K they did not offer it with a built in DVR so this was our only option if we wanted one.
Just some food for thought,
Phil

Where did you pick up the DVR.? We need one to watch our shows that come on past the time we go to bed. We are planing on going dish pay as you go when the Rv parks we stay at don't have it.
I guesswhat I need you to explain is theexternal hard drive acting as a DVR.
I'd like to hear more about that, as well. When we go full-time, we will want a DVR of some sort. It will need to be easy to operate or my DW will have problems with it. Does the receiver have software that works with the external drive to catalog and display titles, descriptions, etc?
The 211 K does work as a DVR with an added hard drive. Dish charges a one time $40 fee and is for as many 211k's as you have. The limitations are, it is only a 1 tuner DVR, therefore you need to watch whatever is recording. You can add an off air antenna to the 211k and then you at least are able to record one sat channel and one off air channel at the same time.
You can use the tailgter with your current Dish receiver and & it will record. It will only work for one tv though. But you can watch recorded shows on the other tv.
