Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Ready to FT and stuck with T-Mobile

Hi Everyone;

 

DW and I are set to FT for our first time and headed to the SE for first ever camp host job. We are stuck with T-Mobile for another year and both have Samsung T mobile Androids.  We're not tech savvy, and figure we need to purchase a t- mobile hot spot and then get internet at least on one of our Androids? We just don't want Another T Mobile contract. Maybe just pay the fee and get out of contract and go with Verizon and Mifi and never look back? Thanks

Or you could add something like the Millenicom Hotspot plan to your arsenal? Verizon data service, 20GB a month for $69.99/mo with no contract.

Maybe keep the T-Mobile for your phones until you see how they work for you on the road (their network is actively being improved) before deciding if you buy out the contract?

Redundancy on different networks also has advantages as you travel, as sometimes one works better than the other. If you don't have T-Mobile access, you can always use Google Voice, Skype, etc. for placing calls over the web.

Have you checked the coverage maps to see if T-Mobile will be a problem where you are going? I would do that first. I agree that T-Mobile has the worst coverage of the big 4, but it still has coverage in many places people go.

You should also make an attempt to estimate your usage before making changes. I am sure T-mobile has usage data for your currently. Whomever you are getting internet now might also. Then you can decide if going directly to Verizon or getting the 20GB per month plan from Millenicom, that uses Verizon's network, would be better financially. There is no rule that says you have to get a T-mobile hotspot just because your phones are T-Mobile.

Cherie: Thanks for your reply! Have read a lot about Millenicom. That if I can even say it right...I have a Belkin N300 wireless usb adapter, which I guess would work on my Compaq desktop? DW has a Asus notebook eee pc901 Glad you got the GM back on the road. I drove a 40'dp for 25 yrs, too bad I had 45 back seat drivers. Thanks again!

You can use a USB wireless adapter to get wifi, or you can add a router that can work with the Millenicom system, Pepwave Surf SOHO, WiFiRanger or Cradlepoint MBR95 (what we have), that will provide Ethernet ports for the desktop.
