Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Help -- Direct TV nightmare!

We are having a Winegard Traveler SK-SWM3 installed in our 5ver in a couple weeks.  I am attempting to get two receivers (one a DVR) from Directv. First of all, I am having a difficult time even getting a live person to talk with.  I have had three conversations and not one of them understands what I want.  I have asked for Technical support and that individual told me to go to a local directv store and purchase the receivers (I have found out that this is not possible).  The last one said she understood but kept trying to charge me for the satellite.  Ugh!  Does anyone have any helpful hints for getting just the receivers.  We are not full-timing until March, 2014, but the dealer would like to install and test the receivers.  Thank you!!!

Amazon has a bunch of them listed. Direct TV Recievers

I know your question was specific to Direct TV, however, Dish Network offers a no contract, pay as you go plan for RVers that we use for our plan. They also have RV support personnel you can call who seem to understand our equipment and how we use it.

We had best luck when we started out by asking for a representative for their Distance Network Services. The rest of their customer service people don't even seem to understand what an rv is. lol

We have two HD DVR Direct TV receivers in our home that we have been using in our 5vr for three years now. We get all the same channels that we get at home, HD and all. We had the Wineguard Slimline installed when we purchased the Cameo in 2010. I've since gotten WIFI in the house and the Direct TV installers installed a Genie LNB on my antennae on the house and a couple of other goodies that turned my system into a Genie system without the Genie receiver.

Now what I do when going from house to RV is change the type antennae setting and everything works like before. I'm thinking with a SWM antennae you'll need more than just the standard cabling to get your wanted results.

I have had both, DirecTV and Dish. Neither company fully supports RV'ers. If you have problems they will not dispatch a local rep once they find out you are in an RV. And as you found out, they don't speak RV either. I found Dish to be slightly better than Direct as far as tech support, but they both get failing grades. If you call them and mention RV they start to stutter and stammer and pass your call on to someone else.

It's been a couple years since we had DirecTV but I purchased our receiver at Best Buy. Be advised that even though you buy the receiver it still belongs to Direct and you pay them to rent it each month. When you terminate service they will want it back.

Sorry in advance, I realize this has not much to do with your specific situation, but I will NEVER have DirecTV again!  We had them for YEARS and all was good, then Oct 2012 our DVR started acting funny so they came out and replaced it with a new one.  Well, no one told me that meant I was signing up for another 2 years!  So, fast forward to last month and we decided to switch to cable, as their DVR packages per cheaper, esp. when combining with internet (we were dropping Verizon for home phone and internet).  Then DirecTV sends me a bill for $220 early cancel fee!  I called and said I was NOT paying it as the new equipment was to replace the old not working equipment.  They are still sending me bills, in the mail, and to my email.  They said if I do not pay they will charge the card listed on my account.  Good luck, as I called my card and blocked them from charging anything.  I've been asked did I sign anything when they came to the house, I am not fully sure, but usually you do sign something that says they were there, etc.  No one told me that was another 2 year commitment!  So, I have no idea how this will end up resolved, but I am NOT happy about this at all!

The local independent reps for DirecTV provide much better customer service than corporate.

I'll have to agree with TXRVR on his comment.  I've always gotten good answers from local suppliers, although those tend to be in the smaller towns.

As for Bill and Kelly's comment about their "new commitment," we just had our Direct TV receiver/DVR replace and I was assured that because it was a "direct replacement" with no kind of an upgrade on either equipment or services that there would be no extension of the commitment period.  When I recently received the confirmation letter, it did state the same thing on that.

Now, when we move to Colorado Springs in July, there will be another test of Direct TV.  The owner of Mountaindale offers satellite packages, at least to his long term residents, for something like $35 a month.  Here in Oklahoma City, our current plan is $71 a month.  The Direct TV representative that I worked with said that our monthly bill should go down when we move up there.  I guess we will get to wait and see, and if it doesn't, then I'll cancel our current "package" and pick up Mountaindale's or an new one of our own at the lower prices.
