Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Can a queen become a king?

What kind of "surgery" would it take to modify the usual queen bedroom on most RV's to accommodate a king bed mattress? Has anyone done it? My husband is very handy and once rebuilt the whole interior of a sailboat we owned. We are thinking he might be able to modify if it doesn't interfere with a slide clearance, etc. Advice for or against would be appreciated!

It's just as simple as math......if the numbers are there as in inches, it's easily done....remove the side tables, install a king size piece of plywood on the platform, drag king mattress inside, sleep...

Not easy if your bed is in a slide out. Usually the width is fixed and not expandable.

Having own RVs with the bed in the slide, I'm not sure it's doable.  My current MH has a RV queen that is not in a slide so I converted it to a king using some shade tree carpentry.  I increased the bed width by putting in a cut-to-fit sheet of plywood between the bed frame and supported it along the RV wall.  DW sewed together what one would normally be call a body pillow for that extra space that is flush with the mattress. We now sleep slide ways on what was a queen.  That is king size width, and if one isn't much more than 6 foot, it's plenty of length to stretch out.  It was a fairly simple DIY project with basic power tools.  It does block one set of drawers, but if I need to get to them, I just slide the plywood under the bedding so I can get to it.

Have a king (an rv king...only 72" wide) in my past 2 5ers. Like others have said, if you have the room it can be done. I have replaced both kings and be very carefull if you go to a real (78-80" wide) king that it will fit through the door and you will be able to get it into the bedroom. Replacing my 72" king was about the limit in getting it into my bedroom. I have space for a real king but I'm not sure I could have maneuvered it into place.

There is one motor home with a king size bed where the bed must be tipped up when the slide is retracted. That might be a solution.
As I recall the person that posted about it was not happy about having to extend the slide to use the bed.
