Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Tearing Out Carpet; Opinions and Cost

One thing that would brighten and freshen up my interior is get rid of the faded carpet, and replace it with a laminate or wood (or wood look) floor. I'm sitting here, thinking about it, and wondering, did they put the dinette over the carpet? If I tear it up, what's under there? And, how much might it cost to get a professional to do this? Anyone who's done it, I'd love to hear about it!

As far as removing the ****pit seats, I'd probably cheat, and just cut the carpet around it, and let the skirts hide it; getting the extra chair removed required a trip to the shop, and I'm sure the driver and passenger chairs would be no different. I'm also not into laying down a new subflooring. Why do RV manufacturers install carpeting in the first place? It's just kinda dumb (and dirty) for something that is meant for "camping".

I may look into vinyl wood look squares (inexpensive, light weight, easy to cut and work with) and try ripping out the carpet in the ****pit area first, then doing a section at a time. Matching the color of my cabinets would be so sleek!

Find a corner and lift the carpet. Many RV's will have linoleum underneath. Ours did.

We took out all the carpeting and replaced it with a wood looking vinyl plank flooring. Love it. So easy to keep clean. To finish the areas we put in quarter round, stained the same colour as the floor. Don't know what we would have done if we had carpeting when the dog was sick or had the runs.

OK, I'll snoop around the corners of the rug to see what's underneath. Another annoying thing, they used this ribbed, metal molding between the carpet and the kitchen tile, and also in front of the kitchen cabinets; crumbs and grit gets caught in the ribs, and it's really hard to sweep out. Metal is nice, put a smooth surface is easier to keep clean. One smooth surface throughout would be lovely, with the wood grained, curved molding in front of the cabinets for easy sweeping. There is carpet everywhere, in the stairwell, in the c o c kpit, looks kinda 70's make-out van, with carpet all over!

I pulled up a corner, and it looks like they put down a 4" Wide 1/4" thick strip of wood around the edges to nail the carpet, sunk between that strip is the padding, and the actual floor looks like a hard, white plastic. What is that? Can tiles just be stuck on there?
