kim....depending on where you are a simple system would be to go to radio shack and buy an ANTENNACRAFT set up.....it looks like a lolipop it comes with its own amp that is 110 or 12vlt......I have one and put it on a triple extended painters pole......and attach it to my ladder rack or set it out attached to a camera tri-pod......you would think I have cable in here!!!......I can pull in at 50 to 75 miles in the northeast.....but you will have to go out and aim it with a compass....no rotor system yet

cost under 100 bucks..... easy to store.....no fragile parts to it . its all contained inside the lolipop the thing is lite weight and built like a tank

Kim,

With regards to that one you linked to, it spoke of being capable of up to 150 miles of range. I doubt that seriously. With the experience we've had with living out in the middle of nowhere, VHF would have to have an antenna on a tower that would be about 35 to 40 feet tall. If I remember right, UHF would not be as good as VHF with regards to range.

One of our favorite campgrounds is located in a grove of large & tall pine trees. In one of the sites I could not get a signal with my Dish Sat Antenna at any spot next to our RV.

I started looking for a spot somewhere nearby where I could put the tripod mounted sat dish with a view of the southern sky. I finally found a slit through the trees in the right direction to get a signal. I had to use 150 feet of cable to get to the sat dish. I was able to adjust the dish to get a good signal. We had Dish network programming for the 2 weeks we were there.

Perhaps you may have a slit where you could get a signal.

Terry, you may be right, it could just be another of those 'if it sounds too good to be true.....' kinda things!

Bear ll, we would be happy to use Dish service if they could get us a decent signal, the dish tech guy took a long time trying to find us a signal, he did say that if we were happy having the antenna across the drive from us, we could probably get a signal, but we would have to have the cable going across the road. Not really an option for us. There are spaces in the camp that do get great signals, but they are in the 'short stay' areas, we are in the long stay, it's very pretty, but the trees do put paid to satellite signals. We have asked about getting some of the trees pruned, or the dead ones removed, but because this is an AF base, they just cannot justify the cost. We are in week 6 of the mandatory furloughs (unpaid leave 1 day a week) so we just have to put up with it.

Lucky Mike, I looked on the Radio Shack site but it showed several Antennacraft set ups. The one that looks the most like you described only says 20 miles. One that says 40 miles is $139. Could you possible post a link to the one you are talking about?

Ok this is the antenna I have mounted on a extendable wash pole and also put it on a camera tripod....it works great!!!!

Thanks, Lucky Mike. We don't want to get satellite, but some places, like where we are now, our rig's antenna doesn't pick up much. We don't watch a lot of tv, but we do like to have at least a little choice. We'll definitely be looking at this as a possibility.

I have the same antenna. I live in Racine, WI. kinda half way between Chicago and Milwaukee, Have it mounted on my garage and pick up about 63 channels from Milw & Chicago. I love this antenna, a very good job of pulling in stations.
