Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We have Jack Russell. We always have her walking on with her lead or attatched to the picnic table with her lead. We are always out there with her. However we are also busy on the grill and or playing with our daughter. I know most parks have policy that dogs must be secured by a lead. I do believe the park we are at does. But there are some people who don't keep their dogs on leads. For the most part the dogs stay with the owner. But we have had one or two come on to our site and get close to our dog. My question is if by chance niether party gets to the dogs in time and our dog kills or injures the dog who not secure are we responsible? We have had a few close incounters with a Chiahuahua. Niether dog has been hurt but I am scared that something is going to happen. The people who don't have thier dog on a lead just laugh it off and say "Oh she just wanted to play." Our dog would not be nice with another dog. I just want to know if just plain need to keep our dog inside and set down pads. Because we really don't want to put our dog down because of someone else's stupidity. Or should we get rid of her because she isn't a friendly dog.
As long as you have your dog secured and on your campsite technically you are OK. If some unleashed dog comes into your camp and gets bit it's on the owner of the other dog. As far as one dog killing another it's not very common. One more thing, if there is an incident and you are in the right that does not mean that you can't be dragged into court. If your little guy is that unpredictable you can also use a muzzle.
Gene is right, any fool can file suit for their stupidity. See Stella vs McDonalds. I had an almost set-to with a stupid guy once. Our Jack Russel failed "getting along with others 101", like the original poster. At our campsite, dog on the leash, a guy comes by with his dog loose. I called to him and told him to keep his dog under control. His reply, my dog is OK. Of course his dog ran up to Babe and the fight started. Being the kind of guy I am, I popped his dog with my cane. Not hard, but enough to get the idiot's attention. Of course the guy screamed at me for my dog's attitude and me "beating" his dog with my cane. I took offense at this and asked if he wanted me to turn my dog loose along with my bad attitude. He declined and picked up his 'fluffy' and stormed off and went to the office. Of course, here came the manager. He did not like my bad attitude either. When I explained to him in language he could grasp the meaning of, he left. During the next couple of days, "fluffy" was on a leash when they came by on the other side of the road.
I don't like to hear talk of putting a dog down. Just because yours isn't social does not make her bad. Explain to the chihuahua people that it isn't OK and makes you uncomfortable. Make it about you, not the rules. If they can't empathize with your position you can be a little more stern. I would never consider breaking my family up because of someone else's poor manners. Hey, tell them that on a recent trip across the border your dog picked up a highly contagious skin condition that is nearly impossible to cure. If tomorrow they walk the other direction you'll know it worked.

Just about every State has a leash law.........If another animal comes on to my site and puts my dog in a threaten mode....the unleash dog is fair game and the owner is responsible
It kinda ranks right up there with " My dog doesnt bite"......All dogs bite!!! thats how they defend themselves
I think all dogs should be fined and be placed in the pound for 30 days if caught letting there owners wonder without a leash!!!!!

We are not lost in the Woods.....Just Extreme boondocking!!!!!!
We use a portable metal fence for times we are running in and out of the rv. The dog has a place to feel safe and with food and water and a tarp to keep the sun of him he is very cozy. The rest of the time he is on a leash. Normally we go find a empty lot or dog park so he can get his exercise in and that keeps him calm to.

I'd guess the owners of the unleashed dog in your site would be at fault.
People are not smart. I had a 100 pound German Shepherd at Petco the other day. He was totally focused on me, but some goober with a little poodley dog on a retractable leash was so busy blabbing that the little dog was over sniffing Odin's butt and the owner wasnt even aware. Hello. Luckily I had a ball in my hand and Odin cared nothing about anything except that ball.
Do not even consider getting rid of (or worse!) YOUR DOG. Make it known that you are following the rules and the others need to also. An accidental loose dog is one thing but a repetitive loose dog is another.
My wife and I were sitting in our chairs one evening when a boy about 10 years old ran right through the middle of our camp site between us and our dog. Our dog was on a short lead and she barked and jumped up on the young man but didn't bite him. The boy just came out of dark running fast and we were all kinda caught off guard. He was fine and just kept going. I'm glad nothing happened and even though our dog has never bit anyone she can be a little nervous. It usually takes 2 or 3 minutes before she becomes your best friend. So....... I am concerned about loose dogs and kids running around.
