Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We found a beautiful 2007 Cardinal that Ken fell in love with and very low in price BUT the previous owners smoked in the Unit. So much so, the AC vents are yellow . Other than this issue, it is in excellent condition and was very well cared for.
Anyone know if this smoke odor can be completely eliminated?
some cleaning companies use ozone to remove the smell. If it is as bad as it sounds you might want to check for a local company that does fire restorations like Sevicemaster or similier. They are the ones that come into your house and clean it after a fire and can remove the smoke/soot (and related smells) left behind.

I used to be a smoker, and if you ask my wife's opinions, she will tell you that smoke permeates into everything. If the AC intakes are yellow, you can count on the ducting to be affected as well. In our case, Jo would probably never consider an RV that had a heavy smoker in it.
As to Phil's idea of using someone like Servicemasters, be sure and check with them prior to buying the RV to verify that they will work on an RV. If you do it yourself, keep in mind that the smoke gets everywhere.

We recently purchased a car for my daughter to drive. The previous owner was a smoker. The inside had a thick film of smoke everywhere. The steering wheel and all the knobs had a think layer of gunk. When I went to clean the gunk off it appeared it was a combination of foundation makeup and smoke residue. We started by spraying a bottle of frebreeze then using a steam cleaner on the entire upolstery and carpet. Amazingly there is no smoke smell, not even when I turn on the AC.
Yes, Ozone generators will work in a trailer. Ozone will damage latex rubber and discolour foam rubber so these should be removed during treatment (foam in furniture is hidden so you will not see the colour). It is also harmful for people and pets so you will need to be out of trailer for approx. 8-10hrs or more. You could also use a Hydroxl generator that treats odors also and said to be safer, but I would treat it the same as ozone. There are times when you would have to give it more treatments to remove stubborn odors. Open all cabinets and drawers to allow air movement insde. You should have fans moving the air inside the trailer while the treatment is taking place to get good results. Also like Mark said it would be advisable wipe all surfaces before treatment with a good cleaner, as nicotine sticks to just about everything.
You could have a great bargaining tool to use if you buy it. Depending on who you get to treat the trailer I would think you could treat it for $150-$400 so shop around your area for the best price.
Scott - that was an impressive write up. You must have been in the business. I'll have to file your post for future use. I didn't think you could get rid of the smoke smell. Shows how much I know:)
Thanks Ken, I am in the business. Started in this after my previous career in the auto industry. I am happy to help with anything I can on this forum, my advice is free and you get what you pay for! :)
There are places you can rent them but I have no expierence with that. If you were to do a web seach on restoration companies/suppliers in your area I think one would come up that could send you in the right direction. I do know there rentals between companies in the industry but you would have to check if any of them rent to the public.
The generators themselves are not difficult to use, just be certain to follow the proper steps and to air the trailer out before spending any amount of time in it. Any company would give you the details before treating the trailer with their equipment.
