Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Tool to Help Keep Connected on the Road

As full time RVers who work as we roam, keeping online is crucial to live our lifestyle.  We work remotely online, and are always tweaking our technical arsenal to get the best signal.

About a year ago, we had an idea for a mobile iPhone/iPad app to help - so we created it.  It's called 'Coverage?' - and it simply overlays all of the major US carrier's maps so you can create your own personalized coverage map for the devices you carry.

We use to it help plan our routing, overnight stops, picking directions to head to find a signal and picking campgrounds.  We use the app all the time in our travels.

We just released a major new version yesterday, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Here's a link to the App Store where you can get it:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/coverage/id388815949?mt=8

And here's a video demo I created yesterday to show how it works:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqORlYHd2ps

For this weekend, we have the app on sale for just 99 cents.

This is just a little side hobby project of ours.

Thanks!

 - Cherie

Nope.. not yet. But we have an Android developer who is looking into doing a port for us though.

We're not equipped or interested in doing Android development, and the app market there - unfortunately - is not profitable for most developers. So not much incentive to put the effort needed into it. But, if our interested developer can do it, we'll split the profits with them.

Developing apps is just a little side hobby we do. We created Coverage? to solve our own need to stay connected.

Thanks Trabuco.

MikeH - No, our posting was not intended as spam. I was under the impression from the owners of this forum that community members are welcome to occasionally post about their relevant products. If I have misunderstood this, I will be happy to have this post removed and will discontinue mentioning our apps from time to time. We definitely don't want to come off as spamming our fellow nomads. We're here to be part of the community and help those new to the road figure out the ropes.

We are 6 year full timers ourselves, and the app we posted about we created to help ease our own frustration of keeping connected. It's not our primary business, the app is barely beer money for us. Just thought it might be useful for others who travel the USA and would like to keep connected.

Cherie,

Your situation is not a problem with us.  The majority of the problems are with those that sign up simply to provide links or other information about their products.  You have certainly done more than that by being active with answering questions and making comments.

Thus, you have no need of removing anything.  If you were trying to sell something that had no relationship with RV's and the RV lifestyle, that would be different.

So, if you suddenly want to start selling shingles, be careful.

Terry

Haha! Thanks.  If we do that, could you please just enroll us in the nearest mental facility?  Thanks :)

If it were as easy as just clicking a button to compile for Android - we'd be all about it.  But unfortunately, it's a substantional re-write, and much more difficult to support all the various handsets out there.  There just simply isn't enough of a market for a niche app like this to jusitify the efforts.

Sadly, for us small time developers, supporting multiple mobile operating systems just isn't feasible.

Like I said, we have a developer who likes Coverage? who is investigating doing a port.  Hopefully he'll come back with a different answer than all the others who have looked into it and passed.

None taken here! We do have to be on the lookout for spammers.

 Ken,

You are right about that, however, I should mention that it might be better if either of the moderators or Howard were contacted via private message when one sees what looks like spam.  That way, if someone doesn't know the forum policy on commercial enterprises, they won't take a chance of offending someone who is actually in compliance with that policy.

For any that are new here, the moderators (by username) are Genecop (Gene) and Terry and Jo (Terry).  So, if someone sees what they think is a spammer, feel free to send us a private message.

Everyone's participation is appreciated on the forums, except for those that are spammers.

Terry

Your right Terry....sending a message to one of you was a given as far as I was concerned.

I do have to admit, when I first saw the 'Spam?' questioning, I felt terrible - I really would hate to offend anyone for posting inappropriate content. It is totally not my intent in being here to be seen as just a 'commercial enterprise'.  It's not so much feeling offended, but feeling as not being seen as part of the community here.  Regardless if it's within the policy or not - I'm not sure I'll post similar content in the future - as I totally don't want to be considered a heartless spammer by anyone.

So I would concur, it can save a bit of heartache to make accusations privately to those who can survey the situation better and/or explain the policies.

It did help tremendously to see a comment already made in our defense before we could even respond.  So thank you so much for that Trabuco!   And thanks for the clarification, Terry & Jo - you moderators rock, and I am grateful for your gift to the community.

Thank you,

 - Cherie

I just downloaded it ... it's worth every one of the 199 pennies I paid for it, IMHO. It correctly identified the no-coverage zone for the state park we stayed last week - and maybe wouldn't have if we had this app before...
