Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Direct TV issues

We have Direct TV, the DVR is in the living room and just a receiver in the bedroom, because the way the dish on the top of the fiver is wired this is the set up we have. Our dish is a TRAV'LER® Satellite TV Antennas and when we have bad weather forecasted I stow the dish. Given all that, I am wondering if anyone who has this satellite dish has this problem. With the dish stowed we will go to work, I know we still work but tomorrow is our last day then we are retired, we will come home in the evening and the receivers will be on and the Direct TV logo will be bouncing around on the TV.

I called Direct TV because I thought maybe the receiver has something programmed into it to update the programming each day, but they told me no and there is no way the receiver is turning itself on. I have been sitting by the TV working on the computer and all of a sudden the receiver and TV turn on with no input from me.

Has anyone else experienced this? Maybe we have ghosts in the camper but I don’t believe so.

I have that same thing happen to me.  I have the same set up.  I just write it off to electricial line noise, or, cell phones, or some other device that triggers the receivers.  I don't worry about it.

NorCal, there are a lot of neighbors with sattellite dishs, none close by with Direct TV. Really the only thing that concerns me is the TV coming on because I like to store it, it goes down behind the fireplace, and I don't like it getting hot.
Since today is retirement day for me I am going to spend Monday trying to reset the receiver and maybe I can mess it up enough to have to call Direct TV and we will reset it without the problem.
Mr Bill, I may end up doing exactly as you do just not worry about it and now being retired I won't really have to worry about it.

Please keep us posted on what you find. I've run this through my head a few times and nothing makes sense. You say the TV comes on and is displaying the DirecTV logo, so that means the receiver came on, but not in normal mode (or you would see TV).

It sounds like the receiver is in an setup mode and the logo is the screen saver. I don't know all the options that would leave the receiver in this mode. Recommend the next time it happens you hit a button on your receiver remote control (to break the screen saver) and see "where" you find yourself in the menu's on the receiver. That might provide a clue.

Second, I don't believe there are any DirecTV receivers that will command the TV to turn on. If the TV is on, and your sure you turned it off, then something is turning it on. The remote control would be my first suspect. Next time you leave try taking the batteries out of the remote(s) and see if you still have the problem when you get home.

A lot of your digital receivers (cable/sat/fios) will do that if there is a surge or even enough of a soft brownout sometimes. I have had this occur even in shielded homes with surge supressors. I have never noticed any damage though, I always use surge protectors on electronics though.

It could be electrical interference. I know when I worked at Mt. Washington and lived in the employee dorms I was not hooked up through cable but could actually pick up a couple of cable channels so strange things can happen.

Or it could be ghosts.

If I understand your post here is the deal as pertains to the Direct TV reciver:

I have the dish you have but this is true regardless of dish type.

When you stow the dish the receiver, which is always on if it is plugged in, cannot down load the program guide.  When that happens a “warning” is displayed on the screen.  To protect the TV set from “burning in” from the warning message, the receiver has a screen saver, just like a computer screen saver, that turns on.  This screen saver is the Direct TV logo that bounces around the screen.  (This will happen after about 1 hour of the receiver not receiving a signal from the satellite.)

When you press a button on the remote the screen saver will go away.

There is no way around this as all residential satellite receivers (like Direct TV) are designed to always have connectivity (a signal) from the satellite so they can update the program guide and do a few other “house-keeping” things they must do.

IMO, and I have the same dish you do, I wouldn’t put the dish down unless the winds are forecast to be above 25 MPH.  Mine has been fine up to that level (and higher) without issues.  I understand your concern.  Yes, I’ve gotten up in the middle of the night and lowered mine when on the plains out west and a high wind storm came up.  But in reality it just made me feel better.  It wasn’t necessary.  The dish was fine.

As to why your TV turns on - just a guess - some TV's have a "tune to a program at this time" feature.  Maybe one is set in your TV.  But that's just a guess and a long shot at best.  There is no "auto turn-on" feature in a Direct TV DVR that I know of.

Bill and Linda,
I have finally retired so I got to call Direct TV today, haven't really felt like taking the time before. Anyway, I talked to a guy named Lucky, he said he has been with DT since the beginning, don't know how true that is, but he seemed fairly knowledgeable, not that I would know any difference. He said the same thing you said and I figured the same, the receiver is set to get updates for programming etc. at 3 am and since the dish is down it can't get them and therefore keeps trying all day long. As for the tv coming on the remote is programmed to do that and I don't really want to change it and have to deal with two remotes. So it is a nuisance but one I can live with.
