Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

ANyone else here using Linux and able to access the chat room? I am about at my wit's end trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong (likely) or parachat just doesn't support Linux? (Ubuntu 9.ish, everything is up to date, JRE, Firefox3.6, etc) Yet I still get the "Your browser doesn't support Java" message.

Help?
Cait

Hi Cait,

Sorry you are having trouble.  I know that there are folks running Parachat rooms on Linux, so I don't think it is a Linux compatability issue.

Here is the text from the Parachat Knowledgebase:

Problem:

I see a message that says "Sorry, your web browser is not Java enabled". What do I do?

Solutions:

1. Verify that you are using the latest Java version.

2. Specify which browser installation on your computer should use the latest Java version that you installed. Click the computer's Start button, and open Settings -> Control Panel. Double-click "Java" to open the Java Control Panel. In the Advanced tab, expand the "Default Java for browsers" option, and make sure that each check box is checked.

IF YOU ARE USING THE MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER WEB BROWSER (applies to IE6, IE7 and IE8):

3. Be certain that the Java Plug-in is Enabled In Internet Explorer. Open an Internet Explorer browser window, pull down the Tools file menu, mouse-over "Manage Add-Ons", and choose "Enable or Disable Add-ons". In the window that loads, choose to "Show: Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer". In the list that displays, click "Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20" (or choose the latest Java version that displays in your list). If the Java Plug-in is not already enabled, click the Enable radio button under "Settings" at the base of the window. Click OK to save your change.

4. Pull down your web browser's Tools file menu, and select "Internet Options". In the Advanced tab, scroll down to the "Java (Sun)" option, and make sure "Use JRE 1.6.0_20 for applet (requires restart)" is checked (please note that the JRE version depends on the latest installed on your computer).

5. Visit the web page that contains the ParaChat room using an alternate web browser such as Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, Mozilla or Netscape. If you are able to load the ParaChat room in an alternate web browser without issue, then the issue is likely caused by an Internet Explorer security setting.

I hope the first part of that helps.  It looks like you are using Firefox, so the Internet Explorer part my not provide you with any information.

Perhaps there are members with Linux using our Chat Room and will chime in.  I just don't know for sure.

Hopefully, we can get something figured out.

I'm back on the windows machine today, which is good, since I missed everyone. :P I'm going to try a different distro on the Linux box and see if that makes a difference- I'm wondering if someting about the way I have Ubuntu confiured is causing the problem, since I have it configured the same way on teh two linux computers that it doesn't work on.
