Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
No sugar added means it costs more for some odd reason. A no-salt-added can of soup cost more. If they didn't spend money on salt or sugar, then you'd think the soup would cost less not more.
Speaking of salt, there are three kinds in my kitchen. Iodized, Sea Salt, and No-Salt. The respective price from low to high is in that same order. A teaspoon of Sea Salt has the same amount of sodium as the regular stuff, but costs more. Doesn't salt form when sea water evaporates? My Sea Salt was imported from Spain. I guess the salt water there is better than at Myrtle Beach. I know why No-Salt adds more to my grocery budget. It has no real taste. It takes a wheel barrow full on my eggs to get the same taste as a teaspoon of regular salt. Eggs are another issue. How come egg beaters cost more than regular eggs? You are only getting the white part which is just half of the egg. I also never understood why the cost of brown eggs is higher than white. True, the layer is a different breed of chicken, but research shows there is no difference is nutritional value. Sicne Easter is approaching, find me a chicken that can pump out a colored Easter Egg and I'll be happy to pay extra.
White and wheat flour both come from cereal grains. The nutrients are not processed out of wheat flour as is done with white. If there is no extra expense in process wheat flour how come I never see wheat bread on special at two for a buck?
Brown vs white rice is a real attention getter. With brown, basically all that is done is to remove the husk. White goes thru much more processing, but is cheaper. Hmm?
Low fat cheese cost more and no-fat even more. Now it probably does cost more to remove fat, but I suspect that the fat is sold for some other purpose therefore making up the cost. I might not even gripe about the cost of no-fat cheese if it didn't taste like a piece of christmas wrapping paper.
If I can buy yogurt at three for a dollar, why does my natural yogurt butter cost three times as much as the regular stuff? And what's with natural anyway? The package of my 'all natural' spagetti has more chemicals in it that the Hudson River. Now I understand catchy ad phrases, but I draw the line when someone mentions all natural make-up. No make-up on the face is the real defination of natural. Just ask my wife. I recently saw a bottle of all natural vinegar on the grocery shelf. Well, duh!!
Organic is way more expensive than normal produce. Again there is a lack of something which should be a money saver. If I'm not farming with chemicals shouldn't I have less expense? Perhaps it's because the government requires a certification to be organic. Hey, I have an idea. Maybe farmers could just use manure as a fertilizer and get it where it's abundant....the government.
Sometimes I think it would be better to just eat the un-natural, fatty, salt and sugar saturated stuff and save my money for the by pass surgery. I think for lunch I'm going to have a Big Mac, salty french fries, and a 32 ounce soda.

We know exactly what you mean.Linda and I have been on a modified Atkins for about 10 months now(very successful for both by the way). Our food budget has increased about $ 30 to $50 per month.

It all follows the economic law of supply and demand. There is less demand for the "better" products so manufacturers produce less of them thus, they are more expensive to produce on an individual level, thus they cost more. If everyone used Sea Salt and the demand was high and they could keep up with production, then it would be less expensive than regular salt because it would be produced in greater volume and each individual container would cost less to produce. Of course, some "better" foods cost more because the manufacturing/farming processes are more strictly controlled and monitered and they are subject to more intense scrutiny, (allegedly), than the regular stuff. All that adds to the cost of each individual item.

I have a totally different outlook toward life, health and longevity. My attitude is to eat what I want, when I want, that tastes best to me without regards to calories, fat, cholesterol etc.
Needless to say that leads to a lot of butter, sugar salt, and alcohol. I figure I only go through once, might as well enjoy it. It's not how long I live but how much fun I have.
TXRVR, you are so right!!! My DH is on very high food restriction and one diet cancels out the other diet and there is nothing left to eat. And yes, why is this stuff more expensive. Sometimes, we feel like chucking it all and just eating to enjoy life. But then what?
Yeah I'm one of those don't "buy" into eating healthy. I eat what and when I want. I do eat apples, oranges and lots of fruits and veggies, but as far as buying specialty stuff... I just leave it on the shelf.

I'm with Fred on this one. I'm supposed to be watching what I eat but those low calorie, low cholestrol diets are like gnawing on tree bark. Quality in life is what I'm looking for. If longevity comes with it great, if not at least I'll go out happy. --Rod
I wish I could eat what I want but unfortunately I have these genes that cause me to gain weight thinking about food. I am the original junk food junkie and still eat all the items I want just not as often. At least on this diet you don't worry about fat content or calories, just eat a lot of protein( meat, eggs etc.) I'm not looking for longevity just tired of shopping at tent and awning stores for clothes.I envy those who don't have to worry about it. I tried the low fat, low calorie diets and agree, just like grazing with cattle in a field.Didn't work any way.
