Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Our AC unit stopped working through the night. Usually we shut it off every night and then start it back up in the morning. The fan usually turns on first then it takes awhile for the ac to kick in and start working; it always has a loud hum/grumble when it first kicks in and starts cooling the air. However last night there was a severe thunderstorm and we got a lot of rain. This morning before we decided to clean out the filters but put everything back the way it was. Now all that we can get working is the fan portion even though it is on high cool. All fan setting work properly. The AC unit is an older DuoTherm model 54615-G46. It doesn't have a thermostat to adjust how cold just three different settings. Do AC roof units need to run for awhile to dry out after a long hard rain or does this sound like our AC has died?

Typically the roof ac unit does not require time to "dry out" following a rain. Having said that,it is possible that water could have penetrated some of the electrical connections and caused something to short out.
You do not say whether you can hear the compressor attempting to start or not. If you can hear it attempting to start and it does not start, the chances are that the hard start kit, a capacitor and a bleeding network, may have failed. These circuit components are used to give the compressor an extra boost of power on start up. They can be replaced easily but you may need to order the parts.

Yours sounds like the compressor may have given up or something's wrong with the control circuit board.
Our old A/C unit, I think it was the same model as yours, was doing the same thing. Only the fan would work, no compressor. I took it to a service center and they tested it and found the seals in the compressor had gone bad. It was about 10 years old.
We bought a new unit.
