Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Verizon PC Card

Hubby and I are hoping to full-time in about 6-months.  I originally was going to get a satellite system, but I can't justify the cost at this point.

I do have a Verizon PC card in my laptop (not activated yet).   I will need the internet to send and receive large datafiles (rarely more than 7000 KB) a couple days a week.

What have your experiences been with Verizon's coverage for PC cards?   

Will their PC card plans be able to meet my needs without breaking the bank with additional charges?

I believe that Verizon's nominal limit is about 1 gig per month. Most "air card" providers set a flag at about 3 gig per month. At that point, they state that they have the right to cancel without notice.

Those figures are off the top of my head, however on my web site I have the slides to a talk I presented at a Monaco rally. This topic is covered in that talk, feel free to download the slides. This is the link.

Make sure that your travel patterns match up to Verizon's data coverage. Their maps show they are good close to the interstate and large cities. The farther you get from their "best" coverage, the slower the service will be. It may become none existent in some locations.

Verizon's limit is 5GB per month, not 1GB.
Service is $60/month (plus taxes) and the minimum contract is 1 year.
You can get EVDO routers for aircards that let you share the internet with multiple computers and keeps you from having those wierd incompatabilities that aircard drivers have with some computers. Depending on the aircard you have you still might find it better to get another one, since the one you have might not be using the newest standard. http://3gstore.com/ is a good place to check things out. Remember the people at the Verizon stores rarely know anything about aircards.

Hi Colleen,
We have the Verizon pc card and it works well for us here in the west.  Got it when we purchased our pc.  We have had it for 2 yrs while on the road full-timing.

That was my worry as well...since I maintain websites on the side as well as test a lot of software. Combine that with the various updates required for virus protection and to keep Vista running (LOL!).

But I've had the service since 10/7 and have used it almost every day. Maybe a week of that time (not all at one time, various days) I used other connections (free local Wi-Fi, pay Wi-Fi). I still haven't hit the 5GB limit.

Add to that, my bill now shows unlimited usage....goes back to the lawsuit Verizon lost.

You should be fine...

I feel much better about our decision to go with the PC card.  It sounds like it will accomodate our needs.
