Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

What exactly do we need?

We are very new to this camping thing.  We are not full timers and will probably never be.  We have a new camper and are planning a trip in June from Louisiana to Des Moines, Ia. and west to Las Vegas and probably further north west.  We have a little teeny white TV antenna on top of the camper, but no programs to speak of are ever pulled in.  We do like to watch tv at night.  What exactly do we need to buy that can at least get some kind of reception when we are traveling?  I would guess this needs to be on another forum, but we are traveling west from Des Moines toward Las Vegas. Can anyone point us toward a great travel planning book, web site, etc?  Or can any of you recommend any places in between that we should see or stop at.  We are not glued to a straight line to Vegas, just going in that general direction.  If something else is between where we are leaving and where we are going, we are all for doing that.  Sorry for the long post.  Regards, P.kuehne in La.

For TV your best bet is to get a roof top antenna that has an amplifier (Winegard) and can be rotated from inside to find the best signal. This will give you the best chance of pulling in weak signals.

Majority of the RV Parks offer cable TV some for an extra fee. This will give you lots of channel choices when you are setup in an RV Park.

Alternatives are:

Satelite TV service from Dish or Direct TV. There is a monthly fee for the package of services you choose but will give you TV service just about anywhere you travel.

The latest is internet TV. Boxes from Amazon, Sony, Rokio and others will give you access to movies, sports, documentaries as well as other TV content. This requires a box plus internet service. Over half of the RV Parks offer WiFi for internet (fee or no fee) or you can get a cellphone /aircard to connect to the internet. There may be extra costs and usage limits.

You probably already know this, but I didn't when we started, so I'll throw it out there...did you turn on the power for the antenna before you searched for the channels on the tv? Most places we get at least the main channels through the tv antenna, and they come in really good.

Oh my, the amount of stuff to see from Des Moines west to Las Vegas is HUGE!  How much time do you have?  Do you want to go north and then drop down to Vegas?  So many choices!

We have an antenna and it is adjustable from a controller inside; we have averaged as few as 8 channels and up to 48 depending on location.

Thank you so much for your info. I think we have solved the TV thing, but we have all the time in the world for the trip west. What do you suggest? REgards, Piggy in La.
