Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Pulled the trigger yesterday

Congratulations! I have always heard that the Foretravel was a great coach. So, you got the snow too. We got almost 11 inches which is more snow than I have seen in KS, well, in almost forever. Gosh, you must be so excited!  Cathy P.

Once our mpg sold we started looking in earnest for our full-time coach. We had narrowed it down to a 'Bird, a Foretravel, or a Newell. Last weekend we visited a couple that is selling their 1993 Foretravel U300 40' coach. We liked the coach, and spent a lot of time discussing it and praying about it. Yesterday morning we called them with an offer, and to our great surprise they accepted it immediately. Now all we have to do is figure out how to get it from there to here. When we went down we left here at 7:00 a.m. and didn't get home until midnight. This old man isn't going to do that again! We had planned on using the two days off for spring break, but due to weather closing school yesterday and today those days are going to be used as make-up days. We'll just have to see what can be worked out.

Congratulations on the purchase.  We certianly know that you've been doing your homework.

Our first camper, purchased way back in the 70's, was purchased from an older couple that could no longer go camping.  It provided us with a lot of years of camping in Colorado and northern New Mexico.  May your new purchase be as beneficial to you as ours was to us.

Of course, our first one was only 16 feet long for a family of 4.  The boys would pitch tents to sleep in and unless it rained, we would be out and about.  Except for one year when the whole week was rainy and 4 people spent almost all the time inside the camper.

Send some of that moisture back here! We're still about a foot short on rainfall, and the long term forecasts don't sound promising.

I thought you were bugging out of there!? After spending most of my life in SD/MN I have NO desire to ever spend another winter there. It will be bad enough to have to go up for a day or two for my tax appointment in March.

kb0zke, Congrats on your new home!

David,

Congratulations on your new home.  I know you've been stressing over this for some time and it must be a relief to finally find THE one.  Does this mean you won't be coming to the BIG RV show in Springfield next weekend?

Probably not. One slight possibility is that we will be going to get the coach then. Lots of things to arrange, including probably taking a personal day from school, which means preparing for a substitute for that day. These two days off due to the weather pretty much ruined our original plans. I won't be posting that we are going to get the coach, but I'll post that the coach is at our place. Once it is here I'll figure out how to post some pictures somewhere.

David,

If you have an account with an online photos sharing site like Photobucket or Picasa, it is pretty easy to post pictures.  Sometimes it is a bigger issue to be sure and resize the digital images before posting them to the photo sharing site.  Otherwise, one's photos can be HUGE and create a nuisance with trying to read the posts.

If you have questions about the process, feel free to PM me and I'll try to help.  I imagine a lot of us are anxious to see what you new coach looks like.

Thanks, Terry. We're trying to figure out when we can go get the coach. Since it is six hours away, just driving down, getting in and driving back makes for a long day. Since it would be smart to get a decent checkout on the systems, I figure that it will be one day for driving down and doing the paperwork (OK requires a notary on the title) and some systems checkout, and a second day to finish the checkout and drive home. Since I'm still teaching and the weather seems to have taken our long weekends, I'm thinking that I may need to take a personal day or two.

We'll check into setting up an online photo account.

Based on the above bolded part, are you buying from someone in Oklahoma?  If so, where?

I'm jumping in here. I'm kb0zke's wife. Yes, the coach is in Oklahoma. We really don't need a notary since we are in MO, but the seller says we do. Our daughter works at a license office in MO and has given us the list of what we need. Years ago we bought a car out-of-state and went though some challenges to get it licensed here. It's all good though since we need to take a couple of days to check out everything. We are really excited about finally finding our coach. This is a big step toward our dream.

Thanks, Jo Ann.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding a notary public.  Just about any bank and many other businesses have notaries.  We work for a state agency in Oklahoma City and our office alone has 3 to 5 notaries in the building.  Of course, not knowing what city/town in Oklahoma you are going to, there may be fewer than I think.  But, keep the banks in mind.

The coach is in Holdenville, and I believe the seller has a notary in mind.

David,

If I understand correctly, since you bought it out of state, you won't have to pay sales tax when you register it.  Let me know how this works out when you go to the DOR.

Vance, it was our experience when we bought out of state and brought home with 30 day dealer tags, that we paid our home state sales tax when we registered our rig. They'll get you somewhere, state are all hurting for taxes.

Vance, I did some checking just now, and found this article: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/political-fix/missouri-legislature-lets-nixon-s-veto-stand-on-auto-tax/article_ee20b5ce-fd0e-11e1-ac2a-0019bb30f31a.html and this one that has a bit more information: http://www.semissourian.com/story/1943315.html

Since that state's use tax is the same rate as the sales tax, it really doesn't matter what one calls it. We'll have to pay the state their share. If there is no LOCAL use tax, then the state tax (4.225%) is all that we'll have to pay.

teaberryeagle, ours looks similar to that one, but that's not our coach. We're hoping to get it later this week. Once we have it home we'll get some pictures and let everyone know where to go to look at them.

We checked on the taxes a bit, and it sounds like we will pay ONLY MO use tax (same as state sales tax), but NOT county tax. We'll see what it actually is when we go to register it. We'll have to get it inspected here, too, so I'll need to find someone to do that, too.

David and Sherry,

There was an attorney, possibly here in Springfield, that bought a used boat out of state.  After registering it, he didn't think he should have paid sales tax on it since it was purchased out of state.  He brought suit and the MO Supreme Court ruled in his favor--effectively eliminating sales tax on that type of purchase.  The state tried to reinstate the tax but I understand Gov Nixon vetoed it.  I just heard on the news a week or so ago the state had lost around $43 million because of this and there are still rumblings about reinstating it.  Check on this a little further, David.  I will too.  If this is true, we plan on buying the TV and 5er out of state.  This would be a savings of $6-7000!  Think of the fuel and campground fees this would cover!

David,

Thanks for the info.  I've lived in MO all my life and never heard of the 'use tax'.  Like Sherry said, they'll figure some way to get it.

Friday we drove down to Holdenville to get the coach. Since the only thing the notary needed to do was notarize the seller's signature, they had that done before we arrived. We spent some time with the sellers going over the coach. They had 10 pages of hand-written notes for us! Yesterday morning after a few more questions I started the coach (more instructions) and then backed it out from the "carport" they had for it. Almost hit a couple of small trees, but didn't. Stopped a couple of miles up the road to fill the tank, and then slowly down the road to home, 321 miles from fill to fill (filled up when I got back here). Then the part that had us concerned - getting into the driveway. We've had a 36' coach here, but ours is a 40' one, so it has a somewhat longer wheelbase. With Jo Ann outside watching and directing, I made it in on the second try.

Only a few minor issues to deal with, mostly electrical. We have 30 days to get it licensed and titled, so I'll be busy checking and replacing the bulbs, etc. We finally got some much-needed rain last night and today, so no pictures yet.

Thanks, everyone. Jo Ann took some pictures today, and we're setting up a photobucket account so everyone can see them.

One minor problem we noted was that the emergency flashers didn't work. Today I opened the dash and poked around a bit. It seems that the flasher had come out of the socket. Plugged it back in and all was fine. Of course, there is still that RF turn signal that doesn't work, but that can wait until tomorrow when it is a bit warmer.
