Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

I’m about to be unpopular and I have concluded that I’m OK with that.

But it’s been eating at me since the Strawberry Park thread.  So I’ll jump into the morass and state an opinion that isn’t going to be liked.

Dog owners are killing their pet’s acceptance.

Now at this point dismiss me as a dog hater and move on I’ll wait.

We had dogs most of the time I was growing up, and cats.  But dogs were always around and our dogs were not the best behaved in the world but they did the basics.  They heeled they didn’t jump on people (other than us kids).

Now as then I see people letting their dogs run.  Letting them leave waste all over.  Not taking the dogs with them, leaving  the dogs  to bark their heads off in the campsite while the owners go boating.

What has changed?

You… the other dog owners.  I remember my father putting water out for other peoples dogs, and complaining to the owner about the dogs behavior if need be.  Yeah it didn’t always do him any good; it doesn’t always do me any good to talk to the folks camped near us.

But the moral cowardice that says “It’s not my problem” leaves it to non dog owners to go to the campground and complain.  The more complaints that come in or in the case of one campground the owner becoming alarmed at the number of dogs he felt responsible for, that people were leaving locked in their RV’s.  Leading him to consider banning dogs.

I often feel in some campgrounds that some of the people there have a dog because … campers have dogs.  In fact in Lake Livingston RV Park one year a young couple said that.  Dog owners have come to feel entitled much like a welfare queen.  I’ve had dog owners dismiss my complaints about their 80 pound dog jumping on my 70 year old mother by saying “What do you expect he’s only a puppy.” 

What do I expect?  If your dog is out in public I expect you to control it.  Not allowing it to jump on senior citizens with canes.  I expect that when your dog takes a crap on the swimming beach that you will clean it up. 

Not that I’m going to worry about it much longer.  Insurance companies are getting tired of paying out over unruly dogs.  And sadly all dog owners are going to suffer.  Dog owners don’t look out for each other and don’t advise each other.  Each of you goes your own way in your own world.

We've been in over 330 campgrounds since we've been full timing and are dog owners. I have to say that in probably over 95% of the campgrounds we have been in most of the dog owners picked up after their dogs.

Maybe we've been lucky, but I'm not seeing the problem you are describing.

 Subsitute the word "kids" everywhere you have "dogs" and I say I've seen more of that type behavior.

We have 2 dogs.   I think there are a few that don't pick up after their dogs.  I don't think it is any different than it was when we first started camping 25 years ago.

Mallo, I think I get what you are saying, rarely, we do come across people who own dogs that should not. One time at a local dog park I pulled in with my trained Mastiff in the van, as soon as the van came to a stop, a Black Lab jumped up on the side of my van, scratching and mudding up the side of my van. I got out in front of everyone and reprimanded the owner for not controlling there dog. Everyone applauded my actions and I went along my way......Speak up if you witness one of these bad dog owners.......

I also agree with what Fred said, but for the wrong reason.

....over 95% of the campgrounds we have been in most of the dog owners picked up after their dogs.

It appears at no campground does he see everyone picking up after their dogs.

 Because it's not a chronic issue Luvglass, most dog owners are good with their dogs.  the minority of owners though are making all dogs unwelcome.  See Gene's post below if dog owners don't police themselves rules will come down from above.

You see it in the courts now.  When I was a kid it was taken into account if the dog was mean or not before ordering a dog put down in a biting situation.  The fact that the human biten may be at fault was a given then.  Now can you say the same is true?  It wasn't in PA when we moved out.

It's not anything the dog owners may of done wrong but the culture has changed around you. 

I'm pointing out the other side of the coin. Everyone wants to say "not my dog".  Your right it's not your dog but the dogs that are not being handled correctly effect your dog.
