Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Yet another Sat TV Question

I'm sorry to ask,but having sold the house and always having had cable. I've no point of reference on Sat systems. I understand the choice between Direct and Dish is like the Ford and Dodge or Chevy thing, but since I never have had or will have residential Sat service, I saw the Dish program offered by Camping World as a reasonable solution, but now I'm not so sure. does anyone use it? Does it have to be reactivated each month, or only when you don't want it?Can a DVR be used with it? Dish for that system(or any for that matter) auto or manual? (we are real low tech!!) Someone told me that if you don't have residential service,you can't get Direct TV, period. We are living in our rig now (in anticipation of escrow close 6/10), and will travel all summer(east coast & back)then back to where we are now, 'till June. We have cable in the campground here,but limited.That said, we do have time for the Sat decision, it just seems so confusing. any help would be apprecieated. the more I look into this, the more confused I seem to get. Thank you,as always!!

You can get either DirecTV or Dish.  You can use a DVR with either.  You can have an automatic or a manual dish with either.  You don't have to have a residential (permanent house) account with either.  Both have ongoing plans with monthly payments - you don't have to "reactivate" each month.

We have some really good Sat TV experts on here, and I'm sure they will be chiming in shortly.  It can be confusing.  Good luck!  smile

I've not run the numbers but in our travels I would say less than 50% of the time we had acceptable TV service provided by the CG. You will find that full-timers have a different expectation from CG's than the weekend campers. We got tired of poor TV and internet from CG's and made the decision to be self-sufficient. It's a big relief to know that you have your own internet and TV not matter where you stop.

Thank you both. So, how does one get started? Do I look for a provider/installer who does RV's specifically? Do I get a carry-out automatic or similar? How difficult is it to adjust or find channels on a manual dish?One ad said "if you want DVR, just attach an external hard drive". To what? How would you access it? It's embarassing to be so clueless, but I am.

We too, want the ability to be self sufficient. We are happy with our AirCard,and the usage allowance is not a problem. The TV thing is very confusing. Perhaps I'm making too much of it, but it seems simple on its face, but then full of if's and but's on closer look.

We are new to satellite also. For us, we made several phone calls (a customer service rep from Dish couldn't speak english well enough for dh to understand and he hung up and called DirecTV) We were given names and phone numbers of reps in our area. Went to an office, picked out a plan, gave them the debit card, and they handed us a receiver and dish. After a couple hours of trying to figure things out we called and they came out and set it up for us. We don't know a lot about the HD and tivo(or whatever they call it) but will just keep trying. Good luck and hope you get it figured out. I don't think you are making too much of it as it IS a big step and a buying into a two year contract without knowing is a difficult decision.

See if any of the local RV dealerships near you handle DirecTV or DISH. They should be able to advise you on your options. If you plan to use a tripod mounted sat dish and only one TV in your rig then I think either provider, DISH or DirecTV would not be a problem as most newer RV's have an external feed point for both cable TV and sat TV.
