Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Monitering Internet Plan Use?

I have the Millenicom plan.  I used Google and found the way to log in and look at my account and package but where the usage is supposed to be is blank.  I also read they do not keep it updated.  I did look at the settings and connection log,  but somewhere else I read that that number is not always correct.  Just wondering if there is a generic way to check this?  Thanks in advance for your help.

You can download a usage monitoring program for you computer. I personally use DU meter but it's not free, if you google around there are plenty of free alternatives available. Using one of these programs will allow you to monitor your usage and give you a more real time idea where you're at for the month.

DU Meter is only for Windows machines, so it doesn't do us any good. I found this on CNET:

You can also email Millenicom and they will email you back your current usage. Not real time, I know. They told me they are working on a fix...

I like to use iStat Pro on my MacBook Pro because it's just a little widget I can bring up to display my data usage for the day. It also records memory usage & computer temps etc so I find it very handy.

Found one called BitMeter at download.com. Installed and will post when I get it all figured out(hopefully in this lifetime)

It seems most of these freebies will just monitor the particular computer its installed on. For instance, If you are using Millenicom with a router - and running 3 or 4 devices on your network, these programs can't monitor all your bandwidth going through your router (or server). So they are kina useless on a network, but probably will work ok on a single computer...

To monitor what the router sees would require the router itself to do the monitoring and I haven't seen any mention of that type of monitoring available from either Cradlepoint or WiFiRanger. You have to buy commercial routers or run a Linux-based router with custom firmware (I think Tomato firmware can do it) to have such monitoring, which would require you to use two routers hooked together.

Two routers? Haven't bought the first one yet. I installed bitmeter and it's about what I paid for it(nothing). I did check online and Millenicom now posted my usage within the last couple of days. I am not pushing 20 gb so not too worried. Was hoping for an easier answer but thanks for the info.

We have the 20G Millenicom set up and when we first set it up the usage was blank for about 3 weeks. It now shows up with a delay but we are no where near the 20G. Almost at 5G now (3 days ago).

Is this a feature that you'd like to see included on the WiFi Ranger?

For users using multiple computers the best thing to do is install the software on all the computers. I know that's not an ideal solution but all you'd need to do is add up your bandwidth from each computers reading to get your total for the month.

Millenicom uses the Verizon service. Once you get your modem phone number you can sign up for a MyVerzion account using that phone number. Once that's setup you should be able to check your usage on the site with little effort. I have mine setup to e-mail me when I hit 25% - 50% and 75% of my monthly allowance so I really don't have to check anything at all as long as I am not getting any e-mails.

Is Millenicon a 3rd party internet provider?  We are currently with Coast to Coast Cellular and have had serious customer service problems with them.  We started with Group Access through the 3G store and they sold our account to Coast to Coast.  We're very leary of signing up with a 3rd party provider.  Sounds like those of you that have Millenicon are pleased with the service. 

What is the coverage like?  And is it fast?  We're looking for a plan with more than 5GB per month that we can use with more than one computer.

I'm considering getting an iPhone because I heard you can use it as a wi-fi with the internet package on the phone.  Not sure if that's true.  This is all so confusing!

Millenicom uses the Verizon service so where ever you would get service if you had a Verizon air card you will get service from your Millenicom card. They have a non-disclosure agreement with Verizon so they cannot state that anywhere but users have been able to verify the coverage and the phone number is tied to a Verizon account allowing you to use the myverizon online services.

It is confusing, especially since the choices and technology are changing at a very fast pace.

As Bill said, Millinecom uses Verizon for its Advanced plan with a 20GB per month limit.  They do have an unlimited plan that uses Sprint's network for $10 more per month.  The Advanced plan uses a USB760 modem, which is very well supported by the 3G/4G routers, so you can share the signal with wifi and/or Ethernet.  Verizon has better coverage for data than Sprint and both beat AT&T for data by a long shot. 

You can use a Verizon iPhone as a wifi hotspot for $20 more per month but are limited to 2GB per month of usage.   There are also other Verizon phones, mostly Android (Droid), that can also be wifi hotspots for the same price and 2GB limit. 

Verizon recently changed their aircard plans to only support the MiFi (an intergrated wireless router and aircard) and 4G modems.  The monthly cost is now $50 for 5GB or $80 for 10GB, but the overage charges are $10/GB for both instead of the old plans much higher cost.  The MiFi cannot be amplified or hooked to a wired antenna, which limits its ability in weak areas without using a more expensive wireless amplifier.  The new 4G modems have been getting frequent updates and the routers are just now starting to support them with some stability.  Wait a couple months and they will be great.
