Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

How Does Windows 7 work as Wi-Fi?

We just today bought a second laptop for our fulltiming adventure and it came with Windows 7.  Our other laptop has Vista.

We have US Cellular cell service which tethers to our laptop for internet.  We've been very satisfied with it so far although we haven't traveled too much.  There is not a router specifically for US Cellular.  The 3G store told me they thought the Cradle Point would work with my phone, but if not, I would have to return it and pay for return shipping. 

Today I read on this forum that you can use Windows 7 as a hot spot.  I googled how to do it and found some confusing (for me) information.  Can anyone tell me exactly how it works and how to set it up?  I'm not very technically savvy, but I can follow instructions pretty well aww

If this would work, I would be super thrilled!!!biggrin

I use the simple program "Connectify." It works awesome. Just download and start start sharing.http://connectify.me/ OR you can set up a home network through windows seven and others with windows seven can share your internet. Windows seven is great. Let me know if you need more help.

I wanted to update on our Wi-Fi problems.  It turns out the problem was with our internet provider, US Cellular.  We have been long-time customers and had the internet option of tethering the phone to the laptop for internet.  This worked great until we got a 2nd laptop and wanted Wi-Fi in the camper. 

I tried using the Windows 7 on the new laptop.  That didn't work.  I ordered a Cradlepoint from the 3G store and that didn't work.

Finally, I ordered a Verizon USB760 modem from the 3G store.  The lease cost was a one-time fee of $59.95 and $49.99 a month for the internet service.  I am  happy to say we have Wi-Fi in the camper!!

I was able to plug the modem into the Windows 7 laptop and download the connectify.me program for wi-fi.  My Vista laptop will connect and we now both have internet. 

The modem is a limited time offer from the 3G store at this monthly price.  There is no contract, it is a month to month arrangment.

I thought this information might help anyone else trying to use more than one computer on the internet.

Troy,

I tried to use Connectify on my Windows 7 laptop to create a hot-spot.  I have my Droid tethered to my laptop using PDAnet.  I installed the Connectify on my laptop and tried to configure it so that I could share the internet on my computer with my husband on his laptop with Vista.

He can connect to my hotspot but it says "local only" and he can't get onto the internet.  What am I doing wrong?  By the way, the only two modes I can configure on the connectify are Ad-Hoc, either WEP or Open.  I cannot choose Access Point WPA2.

Help!

Connectify told Jo that the problem was that the program only works with certain USB wireless network adaptors and that she should look into getting a newer one. We did that and it still wouldn't work.

When she reported this to Connectify they said to try an older version of the program, since different updates worked with different adaptors.

We tried this and lo and behold, we now have a working hot spot. smile.gif

All's well that ends well, but it was pretty discouraging there for a while.

Fred:  We had been using Connectify without any problems with our Verizon USB modem.  A few weeks ago it suddenly stopped working.  The internet on our Windows 7 was also running very slow so I thought it was a problem with the computer.  I took it back to Best Buy.  They ran a bunch of diagnostic tests and said it was fine.

Today I discovered that Connectify posted a message a few days ago stating that the new version wasn't working for some USB modems.  I uninstalled it and reinstalled the older version.

Low and behold, it works again.  This internet thing has been extremely frustrating.  Hopefully, it will all work well for at least a while.  I'm sick of continuously trying to figure out what's wrong.

We do love our internet  biggrin
