Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We've had Jake since early August, and he's our first Silky Terrier. He's a great little guy and a fun addition to our little family. The vet declared him to be about 1 year old. Full of love and energy. We've been feeding him Eukanuba Adult since that was what our Wheaten/Schnauzer was eating. But. . . well . . . Jake seems to experience gas frequently In fact, twice so far since I've been creating this message.
Have your dogs had this same reaction to Eukanuba? Is it a Silky Terrier thing? I've had dogs that reacted badly to canned dog food, but much less so with dry food. We don't overload them with treats, and they don't get people food. He gets quite a bit of exercise, fresh water, etc.
Suggestions would be appreciated. Really, they would.

Hi Susan, I just did a search on Silky Terriers and found this wonderful informative website that will give you the proper dietary requirements for your silky terrier. Hope this helps.
THANK YOU! Oh, wow! I'll be able to find information about feeding my other guy - a Wheaten/Schnauzer mix. He actually has some of the problems she addresses, like hot spots and yeasty ear infections! I had no idea they might be nutritional in origin.
Thank you again!

Fascinating! We have a "Boston Terrorist" who snores and gasses. Both so loudly that he often wakes us at night. My wife said it's just because he is a "Man"
At least you might get an advance warning! Jake is absolutely silent!
I've been giving him plain cooked rice today in his food. The other dog, Astro, is taking two different meds for an ear infection, and I think they are upsetting HIS stomach now. He's not his usual self, so he's getting lots of rice.
The two of them make a charming pair - sort of like a dead skunk stewing in a full black tank for a week in August. 57 degrees here today, and I've got windows open plus a wickless candle simmering.

Your dog may be sensitive to a lot of grain in some foods. Nutro is a better food than Eukenuba, you could try that first or these will definitely help. They are the best for skin allergies and gas problemos.
We love Nutro Natural Choice. Lamb and rice. Our previous dachshund ate it all his life and enjoyed a long healthy life of 14 years. NEVER had gas! Our present dachshund is also on it and no gas. you really should try it. Brenda

OK, I guess I'm not a very good mommy! I have a silky terrior that has gas all the time and I never thought that maybe I should find a different dog food. My daughter has a silky and her dog has lots of gas also.....guess I'll be checking out another dog food option.
One suggestion I would recommend is to call your vet or get online and find a breeder in your area and talk to them about the issue --he/she will more likely provide the dietary information you need to take care of the uncomfortable digestive problem. The AKC website has a wealth of information on silky terriers.

Good suggestion about contacting a breeder and checking the AKC web site.
I bought a small bag of the Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice yesterday, and both of them loved it! Snarfed it right down. I'll give them a few transition days before passing (sorry for the pun) judgement.

Less is better meaning a quality dog food with less ingredients. I feed my two rescuses California Natural brand by Natura, I prefer the herring and sweet potato dry and I use a quality canned as a topper, meaning a spoonful is mixed in with the dry.
I am very anal when it comes to my pets, they are part of the family. I buy nothing that is made in China or Brazil, only made in the USA.
One of our dogs is 120 lbs and he eats two cups of dry once a day and that is all he needs to sustain himself. When you feed a quality food the nutrition is there.
I also make our dogs treats which is homemade ice cream made from fat free plain yogurt with a scoop of smooth peanut butter blended in and dished into individual cups and frozen. They will eat it not frozen but freezing it gives the dogs something to work at and it is good and healthy for them.
Lamb is bland and easier for a dog to digest, many dogs do not do well on chicken. Dogs love fish and sweet potatos skin and all.
I would recommend a high quality dog food like Natura, Canida, Evo, Wellness, Chicken Soup for Dog Lover's, yes they have flavors other than chicken.
This thread has been a hoot or should I say a toot to read. I agree MrPiper, LMAO too. "It must be a man" LOL"
Our Shi Tzu, Holly has sensitive digestion. I'm sure you have enough info to go on already Unique. Vet gives Holly prednisone for the itching and hot spots. We have to feed her small portions throughout the day or she loses her lunch. We've also had to vary her food as one diet gets old and stops working.
I think its just cause they are such small breeds and so special. Our kids are gone, so Holly is our baby girl.
Since all of America is vitally interested in my dogs' digestive status, I thought it might be time for an update.
We switched to Nutro Lamb & Rice (the mini-chunks, which are about the size of a pea), and things are MUCH better. When I woke up one morning several days after the change, the Silky was in the bed with his nose pointed to the foot of the bed and you-know-what pointed directly at my head (much to my alarm). But then I realized the air was clear. No purple fog. My eyes weren't bleeding. Life is good.
Thanks for all the suggestions, which I'm keeping for future reference. You never can tell. . .

Since lamb and rice is easily digested, should they be getting hungrier and sooner? I've noticed that they will sniff around and lick their bowls between normal feeding times. There also have been times when they ate their usual amount, but stayed at the bowl and licked it like they were still hungry. When I gave them a little more, they wolfed it down. Astro is a Wheaten/Schnauzer mix, weighs about 46 pounds and has 1 cup twice a day. The Silky Terrier, Jake, weighs about 13 pounds and has 1/2 cup twice a day.

I think you just need to watch their weight. Our 1 year old dachshund who weighs 9 lbs. probably eats about a cup a day. Some days if he is very active he will want more and some days less. He has water and food available most of the time. As long as he stays lean I give him as much as he wants. Our previous dachshund was the same way. We rarely give any treats or "people" food. So glad the gas problem has been taken care of..... I went in the bedroom the other day and there was this awful smell. I said to DH, Koby(our dog) has passed gas for the first time in his life. Come to find out it was DH's shoes. Brenda

I had a pair of athletic shoes that I recently had to toss, even after washing them and letting them dry outside in the sun, because just 1 wearing would result in the WORST smell. Whew!
