Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Crock Pots...

Wondering what size crock I should get for the RV???  I currently have the large 5 qt. but it's too big for 2 people.  I'm thinking 2 or 3 qt. for 2 pieces of chicken or sm. pot roast or turkey breast for Thanksgiving???

What size is yours???weirdface.gif

We initially thought the same and gave away our large one and bought a 3 quart for the road.

Lo and behold, we got invited to pot lucks and had to go out and buy another 5 quart. So now we have 2 crock pots.

lol There ya go, no right or wrong answers! We have a 3 qt that we use often, but our potluck favorites are not crockpot recipes.

I needed a new crockpot when we moved into the RV and went to Wal Mart to look. I found one that has three different sizes of the crock that fits in the base.  So, I have a 3, 4 and 5 quart and have used them all.

I just brought the one I had for years. It is a 5 qt. We store it in the basement until I need it. I just made soup and was able to freeze 3 containers full. We now have dinner/lunch for 3 meals. I just didn't want to go out and buy another crock pot when I already had one and then I would have to sell or give away the old one and decided it was just easier. When I need a new one I think I'll go the way Donna did and get the one that has 3 in one.

We have 2 small ones for dips, 2 -3qt for potlucks and small stuff cooking and a 6 qt for big stuff.

All of them get used often, especially the small ones for hot dips and chips.

Thanks everyone...I'm thinking I'll eventually go with the 3 qt. Sounds like that size will work best for us.

Since we're not much for grilling, the space saved will accomodate the crock just fine, lol.

I have a 3 quart crockpot for the 2 of us.  I also have a 'baby crockpot' for use in cooking my oatmeal recipe (overnight cooking).  Make sure that any crockpot you buy has the removable insert for easier clean up, even the baby one if you want that type.  I use the baby crockpot for heating refried beans mixed with a bit of salsa and cheese, too.  Makes a nice side dish and it is a no-fuss method.

We fulltime and I still keep about 10 of my favorite cookbooks on board.  I also maintain a blog dedicated to healthy cooking and lifestyle as I am a Lifetime member of Weight Watchers.  I don't want the fulltime lifestyle to sabotage my 50 lb. weight loss.  There are so many temptations out on the road and it is a struggle!

Hope this helps!

I still use the 3 qt. crock pot my mom gave me in the 70's.  It's inconvenient (the crock doesn't come out of the base for cleaning) and outdated (avocado green - need I say more?), but it has never given me one moment of dissatisfaction.  It still makes the best beef stew and onion pot roast in the world.  I'll never give it up for a newer model.  They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands someday!

I just wrote about this one on the Kitchen Gadget thread....

This is a slow cooker from Coleman. It's great because you don't need electriciy to run it, and it can set out on a picnic table.  The center lifts out and has a locking lid.  Instead of crockery, it's a metal container.  I have used it a few times, but it seems to cook too fast.  I have done soups and stews in it, but would hesitate to try chili or beans...  So I called Coleman to ask if this was *normal*.  They shipped me a new regulator device to see if that helps, and I have not had time to try that yet.   It runs on both the small LP cylindars or you can hook it to a larger propane tank via a hose.

I rarely used my crockpots and I was tempted to get rid of all of them. Instead I kept the 5 1/2qt Smart Pot. I knew it was too big for 2 people (unless I was boiling peanuts lol) but the 4 qt didn't switch to warm automatically. I discovered you can put a 2 or 3 qt oven safe bowl, (pryex, anchor hocking, foil doesn't matter) inside and then put your ingredients into the smaller container and cook as usual. It's an easy way to keep a crockpot that will be big enough for pot lucks but small enough for dinner for two.
