When we got ours the 1st consideration was to get one with a replaceable battery. When I want to use it and the battery is dead I just want to pop a new battery in and not have to wait for it to recharge. Then I considered price,memory (make sure you can fit all your music with a little to spare),size ect.

I am on my third iPod. The 1st was stolen and replaced with a mini.

The 3rd was a gift on retirement and is a video iPod. I have had others but the iPod sounds better all around. I get my music via iTunes. The software will rip from your own CDs or access the iumes music store. There you have access to ALL types of music, TV shows and movies. Obviously requires a lot bandwidth for painless use. Some will argue, but the Apple format has become a defacto standard. That happens no matter what you are a fan of. We had a "Beta" vcr once. It was better too, just not widely accepted.

I also have a music player that accepts the iPod and is used as a stereo replacement. While on the player it recharges. The iPod hooks to your computer vis a USB cable. While hooked up it receives new music and other updates. I also download the last roll from my camera. It charges then too.

Pretty painless, I often download lectures and podcasts from sources I am interested in and listen when I am doing something boring like car service or ... .

Love my iPod -

use it with iTunes to download music and Audible.com to download audio books. I have about 500 songs loaded and 20+ books (which are quite large files) and I've only used about 15% of the storage space. It's easy to use and does need to be recharged. I actually prefer recharging since I don't like to have to carry extra batteries - but it's a personal preference. You can use the iPod when it's recharging as well.

We bought the Bose sound system for iPods and it sounds fantastic. It's a great way to carry lots of music with you and not have all the individual CDs. Plus the iPod recharges when it's in the Bose cradle.

We also have the adapter for the car so you can plug your iPod in to the cigarette lighter and play the iPod through your car's stereo system - this is a great way to listen to audio books while driving long distances. Again the iPod recharges while playing through the car cradle.

I resisted getting an iPod for a long time - didn't see the value in it. But now that I have it - I love it. Instead of carrying whole CDs - I copy to the iPod just the music I want. The new iPods even have video capability - not sure I need that, but who knows! I assume eventually we'll be able to load movies and TV shows on there and just be able to plug it into the TV.
