Hi all, Need to visit New Orleans in a week or 2 and need some one to tell about the campgrounds that are operating at this time. I know about the new high-dollar one ($62+) and would prefer one that is a little less. Thanks in advance Mike

If you're retired military, check out the Naval Support Activity FamCamp in Algiers.  Tel No is 504-678-9230.

There really isn't much else in the immediate area.  St Bernard and Bayou Segnette State parks are both still closed.  The KOA on Airline Hwy is not taking any reservations (I believe the whole campground is leased out to FEMA).  Any others in the area are just mobile home parks that might have room for campers, but I would avoid them. 

The 2 best options are across the lake, about 30-35 miles from downtown NOLA.  They are Fairview-Riverside state park in Madisonville and Fontainebleau state park in Mandeville.  Of the two, Fairview is the nicest.  Fountainbleau suffered quite a bit of hurricane damage, but most of the campsites are open.  Tickfaw state park is also very nice, but at least 50 miles away. 

Please don't give up on New Orleans--the most cosmopolitan city in the USA will be back, and better than ever.  (In case you can't tell, I love my adopted home).

Thanks for the reply. We used to stay on the NOBT seminary grounds, but it was inundated and no sites are available. Guess we will try the rip off spot near the quarter for a night. Mike

I just got back from a business trip to NOLA and was amazed at the destruction (even a year later). I had a little free time and cruised around a little. There is a park down near the quarter, in the middle of town. I don't remember the name but it was near canal and I-110. I did see a number of signs for campgrounds as I drove out I-10 to Baton Rouge...

I, too, got back from New Orleans yesterday.  Very busy, got to see the President, I really like the way he travels...Air Force 1.

I saw the campground you mentioned within the city, it is behind some kind of large grocery store.  Despite long grass and small debris on the street leading in to the CG, the CG itself was clean and neat and a couple of rigs were hooked up there.  Probably about 20-25 spaces on concrete looking pads.

I didn't catch the name, either, but it did catch my attention. Is anyone else familiar with this campgound?

They quoted $69.00 per night less the FMCA or Good Sam discount = $62.10. We will only stop one night to visit the kids back at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. It was inundated last year, but back in residence this year.

Thanks alot, that is the campground I saw.  Appreciate the information and website link.  Planning a trip there to pickup some new Vodoo dolls, wore out my old ones on a couple of RV salesmen.
