We are in Clifton, AZ and are traveling to Mesa tomorrow. We will be on 70 to Globe then 60 to Mesa. Have seen some chatter about highway 60 that goes thru Globe to Show Low. What I'm reading says steep and a 13' 6" tunnel. It appears that the difficult section of 60 goes north out of Globe to Show Low ... we are going west from Globe to Mesa. Have others traveled this route and is there anything to be concerned about? I'm an experienced mountain driver with good equipment (dually, exhaust brake, trailer has electric over hydraulic disc brakes) but I am long and heavy (41 foot 5th wheel GCVW is a bit over 27,000 lbs, and my height is measured at 12'10" ... but I consider that to be 13'). We have always used 13'6" as our minimum clearance just to be safe. So looking for those with some experience on this particular road.

It has been a few years, but as I remember you have a pretty steep climb west of Globe and then about a 7% grade going down for several miles. On the down hill part if you start off at 30-35MPH in 3rd gear with the exhaust brake on you will be fine.

We have taken it many times with our 40' motorhome and been fine. You can't travel in the West without dealing with grades and US60 between Globe and Mesa is somewhat typical. There are many worse grades out there.

Thanks for the responses. Based on your comments on grades, I assume there are no height clearance issues with tunnels or bridges. I see one on my gps around Superior that reports to be 13’5”. That’s a little lower than I like, but if other similar sized rigs have gone thru there without incident that is reassuring. My trucker gps has never lead me astray yet.

The drive was uneventful. The grades between Globe and Mesa were 6 % and 7 % and completely manageable. Speed limit was 50 mph in those sections and in third gear I had to occasionally give it a little gas to keep the speed up to 50 ... the exhaust brake worked beautifully. The tunnel near Superior was 13’ 6” but that isn’t a problem for us.
