As many of you now my wife and I are getting ready to go full-time in a few months, maybe less. One of the things I have been thinking about is what printer we will want to take. I have a relatively small HP Deskjet 1055 and we have a too large Brother printer right now. What I am looking for is a small color printer, probably ink jet, that will also scan. I'm thinking most of the current crop of printers will do that. I know there are some really small printers out there but the one's I've seen seem to be pretty pricey, around $700 last I knew but that was several years ago. What's everyone using?

We are using a HP Deskjet 3755. It’s small, prints, and scans. Plus you can buy XL cartridges.

The big problem for getting advice is printers last for many years, so most of us have old ones. You can still buy the Canon MX-922 we have, but it sounds too big for you.

We have an HP Office Jet 250 Mobile All In One Printer. it is designed for “mobile” office use and has worked great for us. It can print, copy and scan. It is compact, so it doesn’t take up a lot of space. Although it is a wireless printer, we don’t use it as such. I connect it directly to my laptop to print or scan. We bought it just over a year ago at Best Buy and if something happened that I needed to replace it, I would buy another. Price point is around $300.

Yep our "big" printer is an MX920 so it's the same family as the one you have. I am looking for something smaller if I can find it. We'll just see what folks have and go from there.

Each of us can have different needs in a printer as well as other products. One thing that any printer I own needs is good printing of photos. Years ago, we switched over to the Epson printers and I think they still have the all-in-one printers. Their ink is also very good for photos, and they have multiple cartridges for different colors, including one black for black and white printing and another black cartridge for color photo printing.
I'd suggest looking at the Epson. Ours is a few years old, so they may not even have our model any more. Ours is the XP-630 with either WiFi or direct hookup capability in case of poor WiFi. Checking at Office Depot or Staples lets one have an idea of the actual size of the printer, thus making it easier to see if it would fit where you want it. Ours is actually on a removable shelf in the entertainment center above where my desk is located.

I have an MX920. It fits in my motorhome closet just fine. I just have to close the front paper tray to close the closet door. If you need a flat glass platen to scan a document (rather than a motor feed sheet scanner) you are stuck with a certain size footprint (at least 11/14+) though you might find one lighter, as an MX920 sure is heavy.

We bought an Epson (420 I think) ink jet all in one for $69. It came with ink! It folds into a rectangular shape about 10X14X8. Stored it under the couch and took it out when needed. Not optimum if you need to print often. Beat it up the last four years and it’s still fine.

We recently bought a small HP3722 that is designed for college students. It scans, prints and copies and best of all, it stores well on a shelf behind the television. Much better than the old, larger desktop that we got rid of.

We also have an HP DeskJet 3755. It's compact, and the cost of inks is very reasonable.
