Looked through the spring/summer flyer - and laughed :)

The local Home Hardware flyer came today - the glossy colour one that shows page after page of yard tools, gardening supplies, patio stain, exterior paint, and grass seed and maintenance items. That was just the first half; the rest was full of household renovation supplies, multitudinous kitchen appliances each with only one purpose (a $279 steamer? really?) and garage organizational products.
It was so incredibly FREEING to page through it, enjoying the photos of houses, yards and decks, and know that I didn't need to buy a single thing! What a hold our home and yard had over our lives, our spare time, and our budget. Not to mention that unlike some people, I never got a more than a few moments' pleasure out of my yardwork. I loved the first perennials pushing up in spring, and I enjoyed planting some pots of annuals to brighten the yard. Then within a few weeks, I'd be complaining. "They're dry already? Didn't it just rain four days ago?" And my husband was no different: weekends of cutting grass, trimming hedges and spraying weeds was not his idea of a good time.
I don't know which member it is on this forum whose tag line is something like "We have a tiny house but a really huge yard", but I love that perspective. No longer are my belongings going to control my life. The world is my yard and I can't wait to explore every inch I can, without ever having to cut the grass or weed the flowerbeds!

The S&B Lament (copyright 2017) adapted from "My favorite Things"
"Torn garden hoses and picking up dog poop
Lost in the shed is my spanking new scoop
Over stuffed yard waste bags tied up with strings
Are these a few of my favorite things
Paint peeling walls and cracking driveways
Doorbells then ad sells, to Lowes o'er the byways
Thunder storms drop hail and leave many dings
Are these a few of my favorite things
The kids out playing while I mow the lawn
Here comes the snow, have to shovel till dawn
Wondering what new repairs this old house brings
Are these a few of my favorite things.
When the leaves drop
When the weeds pop
When I'm feeling mad
I simply remember my favorite things
And I want to leave so bad."

A few months ago we were having lunch with a cousin. He was so happy a Home Goods store was opening up closer to his house, since he loved going there. Home Goods has stuff for inside the house, furniture, nick knacks, etc., and is not interesting at all for a fulltimer. (His wife also liked the store, but not as much as he did.)

Love the S&B Lament, Brian and Cindi! Great laugh to start the day :)
I did enjoy deadheading my petunias. Weird, I know!

In Laymans Terms ... I share your joy and I have also felt similar when reading adds and seeing commercials on TV. It is a great feeling! I was always a "gadget guy" ... my wife now pokes at me when we see something that I probably would have bought before ... "do you want one of these" she'll ask ... knowing that my new response is "not really". It's pretty transformational.

I'm with ya! Just came in from mowing and other yard work. It's 11:30am and 90deg. with 65% RH. I can't wait until my next exciting gadget is a new wine opener; not a weed eater.
Maybe (hopefully)2021!
Happy 4th,
Steve

The whole "yard" thing is the human equivalent of a hamster on a wheel. Water, Fertilize, Mow ... repeat. Do not miss this part at all.

I have to say I don't think there are as many rv gadgets as home and yard but they sure are expensive and I want them all lol

I share your sense of humor. I just received a contractor bid to restain my 2,300 sq.ft. log cabin, and when it came back $25,000, I refocused my energy to RVTRader and checked my fall seminar reservations at Sieverville. Calling the real estate agent Tuesday.
