My husband and I are fifth wheel wannabes. We are trying to sell our home first. For the past year we have done so much research on fifth wheels and are leaning towards Grand Design....34-38 ft. The truck is what he is undecided about. He definitely wants a one-ton diesel and looking at Ford and Dodge. He's been hearing good and not so good about both. Any opinions would sure help.

Both are good as is Chevrolet, just pick one that has sufficient capability to handle the load it will be carrying. There are fans of brands, but I think the big three are very nearly equal so pick the one you like with the confidence that you've made a good choice.

Assuming not older than 2015 ... older than that then differences do exist that would drive different decisions than I suggested.

Mine is a King Ranch and it's beauty and a towing beast! I have a 15,000 lbs trailer and I have 1,600 lbs of reserve load on the rear axle and 8,000 lbs of reserve in both CGVR and GVW. Plenty of truck for my load. The exhaust brake is GREAT!! Should you choose a truck similar to mine you will LOVE it. Lot's of grunt and lot's of whoa! Believe me, both are important.
