Has anyone been to the Borrego Springs area in the last couple of months? I've heard a few comments from other boondockers in Quartzsite and read on one blog that the rules are changing and camping is only allowed close to the road which is going to force people to camp much closer together than previous experiences.
I didn't see anything on the CA State Park website about this change in rules, just wondering if anyone has recent, first hand knowledge.

I can't answer your question as to the rules, but if the article at the link below is an indicator, Borrego Springs really has a water issue. Perhaps a change in rules is a way of limiting the number of people who want to stay there. According to the article, they pull 20,000 acre feet of water from their aquifer while only about 5,000 acre feet naturally flows into the aquifer.
We spent a few days in Borrego last week. Did not notice anything different. Per the Village Guide, ” Anza Borrego Desert State Park remains one of the few placs in the country where open camping is permitted.”

I was reading this blog post yesterday and it talks about it a bit.
Thanks for the replies. The Rockhouse area is where we had planned to go and are concerned that if we're now limited to a short distance beyond the road that it might be quite crowded and we're looking for some space, peace and quiet.

Well, we arrived and having never camped off Rockhouse road before, my initial thoughts are that the current signs limiting how far off the road we can camp are not friendly for those of us with allergies. The dust is horrible close to the road especially when the ATVS and motorcycles go speeding by. Kind of disappointed after all the wonderful blogs we had read about this place. Not sure it will be a long visit for us here.

Leaping Lizzard campground outside of town, was very well kept, immaculate laundry, bathrooms and pool. Lots of ATVers ,but are required to push their ATV out of the park and the same when they return. No riding in the park and must use a back gate. We were here for three days and enjoyed our stay.

It will likely be short visit, we did have fun touring round to see the huge metal sculptures & the hike into the Palm Canyon Oasis was great. Thinking we might move further south & see if we can find somewhere near the Carrillo Badlands to park for a few nights. This is a huge park to explore ☺
