We are looking at places to stay in Terlingua, Texas for early next year. Which is the better choice: BJ's or Big Bend Resort and Adventures? Our hiking will be out of Chisos, but we are too long for the campground there. Any help would be appreciated. :)

We always stay at Big Bend Resort- we've been there 4-5 times. They have wifi, laundry and 50 amp FHU. But, a ot of people like BJs because its funky. I think either place would be fine for you.
If you are hikers, check out my blog post about the hike to Cattail Falls. The trail is not on maps in order to limit the amount of people who tromp thru the delicate eco system.
On the right hand side of the blog is a link to all my Big Bend National Park posts.
Have a blast!! we love it there!

I've been to both and vote for the Big Bend Resort (formerly Study Butte RV park) as it's convenient and the closest to the NP. BJ's is more rustic, but you might like that, plus it's cheaper, especially for long term stays. I've been visiting Big Bend since the early 70's. Needless to say, I love it. Be sure and hike the Window when it's cool (bring plenty of water) and the Lost Mine Trail (my favorite). Both are strenuous and you might encounter wildlife, like bears, mountain lions and Javelina, so be careful.

You'll like Terlingua. It's uh, different. i52.tinypic.com/2qx3llh.jpg">
P.S. Don't miss the Starlight Theatre in Terlingua at happy hour for a great deal on tacos and decent real maragaritas. Their chili isn't bad either.

Thanks, Sue and Chip! Great information. We plan to visit in early April. We are spending a week at Big Bend with Diana's cousin and husband who are staying at the Chisos Mountain Lodge.

We stayed at Lajitas Resort last March. It was farther from Big Bend but a bit pricier & greener than the parks that were closer. We stayed 2 nights & explored up river with the blue bonnets blooming. The other parks mentioned are definitely more convenient to Big Bend.

We actually stayed in the park at Rio Grande Village. But, Rio Grande Village is a long ways from Chisos. It is a large park and it can take a while to drive across it.

Thats the main reason we don't stay at Rio Grande Cillage ourselves. We love hiking in the Chisos, and even the desert trails we like are mostly on that side of the park (except the hot springs, but they are worth the drive!).
We also really like Terlingua and Study Butte.
As Chip mentioned, its , uh, different, but in an awesome way. We Love the Starlight Theater and $2 Margaritas. There is usually someone playing the guitar on the huge front porch. Just a great place.
Last time there we were able to take a rafting trip down the river. That was actually really cool!
