I have a Dish VIP211Z receiver and just added a 2TB hard drive to use as a dvr. I was shocked to find that if you are recording a program you can't watch another unless it is over the air. On my previous Dish receivers at home, I could record 2 or 3 programs at a time.
Is there any way to be able to record a program on satellite and watch another on satellite?
Thanks!

I think it only has a single tuner... thus either watch or watch and record at the same time but not on different channels. Need more bells and whistles to do that.

Got it. I need to find a dual tuner receiver and I think a Winegard Trav'ler dish. Thanks!

Everything depends on the satellite antenna. The Pathway X2 (also the G2) have two cable connections on the back of the antenna - one for the primary receiver, one for the secondary receiver. HOWEVER, there is only one "collector" in these antenna so you can only lock onto one satellite at a time. You can record a show on receiver #1 but the other channel you view must be coming from the same satellite (you'll watch it on receiver #2). For satellite freedom, you'll need two, separate antenna. I've read some posts of persons toting a stationary antenna for their Hopper receiver but I don't think that antenna can "auto-lock" onto satellites. I also don't know how portable the Hopper system is.

Larry, I'm well aware of your dissapointment but I'll take your 211Z off your hands when you get a replacement. I had a 211K with DVR hard drive for years and have since replaced it with a Hopper in my 5ver. I'm in the need of another 211 for my Tailgator portable dish for my pop up.

The 211Z, as mentioned earlier is a single tuner receiver. Doesn't make any difference what antennae you have, it can only tune one station at a time. I believe the 211K is a dual tuner but check that out on there site to be sure.
The differences in antennae is how many satellites it can lock on to simultaneously. The Travelr has three LNBs and can lock all three Dish sats at once. Thee result is that any receiver can watch any station no matter which sat the station emanates from. Domes and most automatic portables only have a single LNB and can therefor only lock one sat at a time.
The Pathways X2 only has one LNB but two Coax feeds. It can run two separates receivers, ie two 211Zs. Each receiver can watch different stations as long as the different stations are on the same satellite. If the primary TV is watching standard def station and the other wants to watch a different HI def station it's probably not going to happen. Luckily, most Dish station are available off a single sat, but not all.
Are you confused yet?
I have both a Travelr and X2. There are many times where the coach is under a tree that blocks the sat from roof mounted Travelr. That's when I use the X2.
