Today reminded me of why we normally don't visit our daughter in Dallas this time of year. We're sitting in the RV having just ridden out a squall line with ½ in hail and 40+ mph wind with water flowing up to the bottom step on the motorhome. Came down fast and furious. And we are 'boon docking' as the power in the area went out during one of the lighting strikes nearby.
Next year it is definitely back to the west coast for our spring travel!

Maybe not the hail but the W coast isn't staying dry this spring either. Our travels the past few weeks not only missed the current systems in TX but we were followed down the W coast by a system that dumped over 3" of rain on the southern OR coast.

We just completed our month long stay in Texas stay a few weeks ago, lots of Blue Bonnets in bloom everywhere and the weather was great.
After seeing some of the recent weather, I am sure glad we are back on the East Coast now.

Barb - let me know if you figure out the right time to visit Dallas, because we're still trying to figure that out. Last year we arrived in Feb to balmy weather, 2 weeks later an ice storm, 1 month later thunderstorms, tornados and hail and then we left, headed back West. We're thinking maybe October?? We lived there for a long time, but just hate going back with our home on wheels due to weather and the fact that we hate driving through the DFW area traffic with our home on wheels.
Just curious, where did you stay? We had difficulty finding much within Dallas itself and ended up at Lake Lewisville.

LOL, I can remember Dallas in the State Fair venue, hail, wind, rain, soaking wet one year, heat and humidity the next year. OK, still don't know when I should try to bring the home on wheels back to the Dallas area, maybe we'll just continue the fly in visits, already have the week of Thanksgiving targeted as our family visit this year so we can avoid the Christmas mayhem.

I am glad we don't have family in DFW, since the weather is normally much safer if you stay on I-10 or further south. We did take I-20 this spring since we had a stop in Shreveport LA, but we watched the weather in case we had to head further south. We only spent 4 nights between Shreveport and Carlsbad NM.

You guys are worrying me. I'm planning some travel in Texas. I wanted to stay a month starting mid October in each area; west of Dallas, south of Austin, east of Houston, north of Corpus Christi, then south of CC. So mid October to early March. Bad idea? Because of DH's work, we will be moving slow for the first year.

Fall usually isn't a problem. There will be occasional rains, but nothing like the spring storms. It does snow north of Austin (well even in Austin occasionally) in the winter, so do your northern area before Christmas. Not sure why you want to go west of DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth), there is nothing out there but miles and miles and miles and miles of prairie, cows, and oil-pumping donkeys. East of Houston puts you into Louisiana. South of Austin - the hill country is my favorite and that extends down to just about Corpus Christie. Love the CC area - especially Rockport-Fulton. There is a botanical garden in Corpus Christi that has a wonderful orchid house. Even in the winter it is a great place to spend a few hours. South of CC you're heading for the Rio Grande Valley - lots of people like it - just not us.

I'm with Barb on the "why West TX" question unless it's the Big Bend or Guadaloupe National Park areas. The only other area west of DFW that we found interesting was around Glen Rose and Granberry, I remember there being some dinasour tracks, etc. that were of great interest to our daughter.
We actually also really enjoyed east TX, near the Tyler area. The rose festival in October is always beautiful to go to and you are on the edge of the Piney Woods so you actually have real trees.

I would be trying to leave by late March, last year we left April 5th and had tornados 10 miles north of where we had the RV parked on April 3rd. However, be aware that March weather in Dallas can vary greater, very cold to very warm and it can change 5 times in 5 days.

You should leave from the Corpus Christi area in March - great time to travel west, stopping for a week or so in Big Bend and maybe swinging by Fort Davis and to a star night at the McDonald Observatory. Remember, you want to be south of San Antonio by New Years.

I live in North Texas in the DFW area. The one time of year you want to stay out of Texas is in the Spring time! Hail, crazy wind, tornados (we are in Tornado Alley) tons of rain - yeah - not a place you want to be in during the Spring time - avoid Oklahoma as well! LOL
