Hello All. My name is Robert, I'm 40, married with 3 girls ages 8, 6, and 3, and one Tibetan Mastiff. My family and I are very interested in going full-time in a 5th wheel -- I am a registered nurse and my job can be very portable and my children are homeschooled. I grew up taking vacations in a 24' MinnieWinnie Class C and a 32' CruiseAire Class A but my wife has never spent time in one outside of a dealership. We want the ability to take our life on the road, see as much of the country as we can, be able to show our kids the vast variety our country has to offer. As a travel nurse, most of my jobs will be on 3 month contracts, so we will likely only be moving 3-4 times per year.
Have spent some time reading through the Forum already, still have much more to read. Our current thoughts are a Bunkhouse 5th Wheel to be pulled by a one ton dually 'pickup truck' rated to tow in the 24K to 30K range (I know there is more to it than that, I just do not yet understand how to calculate which truck can pull which trailer based on axle ratio, trailer weight, hitch weight, etc). While I love reading about all the custom trailers some of you have, they are far out of my price point. We are interested in a new mid-range 5th wheel ($60-110K range) bunkhouse model, four season, W/D, with the ability to make some minor modifications to maximize internal storage (presumably with a dry weight in the 14K-18K range???).
We plan to attend the RV show in Sacramento this March and are hoping to be able to build some relationships with dealers, banks, and manufacturer reps in order to get the best unit for the best price. I am hoping to gain enough information between now and then to be able to truly see the build quality differences between manufacturers and be able to know what are the important questions to ask.

Welcome, Robert + 4 and a furbaby. You'll find plenty of helpful folks 'round here ready to answer all your Q's with A's. There's plenty of tow calculators on the web, just google it. Even then, if you pose it to the "panel" of esteemed RVers hereabouts they can quickly determine if your own calculations are good to go. Soon enough, you'll be comfortable throwing around numbers. So take a deep breath and enjoy the ride! Let the good times roll.

Welcome!
There are many homeschooling families on here as well as though who are traveling nurses too. I'm from Placerville. The Sac show is a good start, but really not that big and varied. I'd look to also going to a larger show like in Pomona. If you could swing attending one of the RV Dreams rallys, then you'd really get a good idea.

I don't think there are any RV Dreams rallies planned for the Western US for a while. While I would much rather attend an RV Dreams rally than any other type, I do recall seeing that Escapees has a Western Rally in Lodi CA this spring. We aren't arriving in the Sac area until the end of April, so the rally was probably late March or early April. I'm sure you could find info online, we knew we weren't going to be arriving in time to attend.

Hi Robert, welcome to the forum. You've come to a great place to learn and meet wonderful people :)
My husband and I are both traveling nurses, living in a 5th wheel for almost a year now. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk about the travel nursing part of full-timing. It's been an interesting journey.
