Purchasing a used 5er, what are the best tires to buy?

We are buying a 2008 Newmar Cypress 39' fifth wheel. The current Goodyear LT235/85R16-G tires are the originals and made on 31/07 so need to be replaced.
Anyone have a recommendation on replacements?

Replacing them with the same would be OK, but moving up to a 17.5 size rim and H rated tire would take care of any future worries. Tires area pay now or pay later type issue..
Check here for pricing. These folks are used by many www.trailertiresandwheels.com/page/45030

I cannot agree more with Jim and urge you to replace the “G” tires with Goodyear commercial grade G114 “H” tires. These “H” tires are expensive and require you to change out the tire rims; wheels in today’s vernacular. But if you plan to travel in the RV, not just reside, it will be well worth the investment for your safety. These “H” tires will give you 45,000 miles. My first set did with tread to spare according to the tire tread depth gauge.
“G” tires, assuming you don’t have a side wall blowout which is not uncommon, will last maybe 20,000 and that’s pushing it. That’s based on personal experience, not marketing hype. This is the most important upgrade you can do for your safety. If you ever see a sidewall blowout and the damage it can do to a trailer you'll better understand the recommendation.
I agree fully with Jim’s recommendation to use Trailer Tire & Wheel.Call 419-272-2277 and ask for Scott, the owner.Tell him what you have and he can send you what you need.Shipping is very modest and not the deciding factor. The tires will come mounted, balanced (yes, you should balance trailer tires)and ready to bolt on.
I and others on this forum have purchased many tires from Scott and he always provide excellent service and you will not go wrong with this “H” - commercial grade tire upgrade.

We replaced our tires and wheels with Goodyear G114 215/75R 17.5 at trailertiresandwheels.com and are very happy with them.

I did the same. Our 07.5 Mobile Suites came with the GY G 16" tires and never had a single problem. At 5 years we did as you and changed to GY H 17.5" tires and Wheels from TTAW.com.
OP If you are well below the rating of the GY G I would buy them again if not upgrade to the 17.5's. Price both ways with Scott.

I sold the tires and wheels and spare for $1,000 on CL. That really helped with the cost of the 17.5" upgrade.

FWIW, I would not upgrade the spare to an “H” tire.Keep the best “G” tire. That is what I did and never needed it – the spare that is – in 100,000 miles. You can, for a short period of time in an emergency, run a “G” and an “H” on the same side.No problem.

I agree on using the G spare. I changed mine to a cheap H since the GY G was 5 years old.

I also did the 17.5" upgrade from trailertiresandwheels. I'm happy with the tires however the wheels are showing signs of a cream coloured blotching in whatever coating they put on them. I've only had them for 13 months! Anyone else have this issue?
Cheers!

X8 on the Goodyear G114's and Trailertiresandwheels.com. The peace of mind alone will take the edge off the cost.

Not in two sets over 8 years and none on the new set on the NH.
I’d call Scott at Trailer Tire & Wheel and ask him about it if you have any concern.

I went with the Alcoa's because I did not like how poorly the factory Chinese made wheels looked after 5 years on our MobileSuites.

Thanks for suggesting to give them a call Bill. I just received warranty replacement approval and they are shipping me 4 new wheels this week.

Question for those of you that order your tires through this company, do you have them shipped to a local tire shop to put on the trailer? Wasn't sure if a local tire shop would be happy receiving tires from another company, or do you ship them to an RV repair place for install?
We know ours will need replacing some time this year and just starting to think about how we will make that happen with our travel schedule.

In direct answer to your question, we just jack the trailer off the ground with the Big Foot hydraulics and changed the tires. Our current and previous trailer had these available when we need to change tires.
But not having these levers available, putting these on is no different than changing a "flat tire." Just do one tire at a time.
If you’re not comfortable jacking the trailer up one tire at a time then I would simply go a local garage, or RV repair facility, after scoping out there is enough room for the rig, cut a deal with them and drop ship the tires there. This is a simple process but I do understand if some aren’t comfortable changing tires.
In addition you really should have a torque wrench to tighten the lugs correctly and check them frequency when on the road. This is true with any tire lugs, not just these. 110-120 foot pounds is a nominal number but the exact number should be in your manual. However, when your call Trailer Tire and Wheel they can tell you the torque value number for the lug nuts based on what you order. Torque wrenches are not all that expensive for this purpose and can be picked up at any Auto Zone or the like store. Even if you have someone change the tires you still need the torque wrench to check you lugs frequently when traveling. Trailer tire lugs aren’t like car tires, the lugs do loosen a bit during travel until seated.

Ruth,
As Bill mentioned, the Level-Up jacks on your Mobile Suites should work fine for lifting the trailer for changing wheels/tires. That is, if you and Dale want to mess with it. If you are willing to do your own work of putting them on the trailer, you will still have to have some tire facility remove your old tires and put on the new ones, especially so if you want them balanced.
If you have any idea of where you might be when you change the tires, you might see who would be in that area that would be willing to do what it is you want done. Once one is found, verify that you could have the tires shipped to them. Unless you have another place where just the tires could be shipped. I don't know how RV parks might feel about having them shipped to them.

I purchased 17.5" Alcoa's and GY H tires from Scott all balanced and ready to install a couple years ago when I upgraded our MS OE 16" G tires.
Since you are talking tires only I would have Scott give you a Quote then go to your local Discount/Americas tire and GY stores. Tell them each you want a price to Install and balance tires you will be providing. Once you have that tell them you would do business with them if they can be competitive with trailertiresand wheels.com. You may find it will be a lot less hassle to buy locally if they are willing to play ball! I'm betting Discount will come thru for you.
