I can't imagine a volunteer position any better than the one Steve and I have at Lake Mead Recreation Area. This is our second time around doing the road monitoring on the back trails here in the park. It's not the job for everyone but it is definitely interesting and exciting. (You can read our blog to learn more). I'm sure there are other volunteer positions that people feel just as strongly about. I'd like to know what else is out there. Please let us know what volunteer jobs you've enjoyed over the years.

Our best is the one we have now. A campground host position at a COE park. No bathroom/site cleaning!
We really are "hosts!" We greet people, help campers and generally make sure of a smooth running campground. We also do water safety presentations every Saturday night. Three times a summer we have special activities for the campers.
We are experienced hosts so we know just how good this position is.
Is it available? Not a chance.

I actually have two favorites. One is a church camp and the other is for the USFS where job transportation is either an ATV or on horseback. Regarding the first, it is never a dull moment with kids. On the second, it's a fantastic way to be in the great outdoors. Like Dog Folks mentioned, the info is not available unless some form of torturing is involved.

Only volunteered once at Clark County Shooting Complex in Las Vegas. Easy work, great location, but the wind was horrendous.

The best hosting we (I) have done is at the Inks Lake State Park in the Texas hill country. I am one of five guides for deer hunters in acreage adjacent to the park. We built and maintain the blinds and the hunting areas around the blinds and then when the hunts start, we take the hunters out to their blind and pick them up. It's a great area. Our campsite is a water view, full hookup site.
