I have a Toshiba Laptop, Satellite C855D, that came with Windows 8 installed. Later I installed Windows 8.1. The moment that I installed 8.1, the battery stopped working. It now says "plugged in and not charging". My husband has gone through the normal procedures of removing the battery etc etc to no avail. The battery will not charge. Anyone have a solution for this problem?

You might get in touch with Toshiba to see if there are any drivers available. Did you check to see if it was compatible with 8.1 before the upgrade? You might check to see if you can get some restore CD's from Toshiba and restore back to Windows 8.
All that said, I am not the computer guru around here, so take it all with a grain of salt.

I had this to happen but not after an upgrade. It was an internal problem and I ended up replacing laptop. I could "wiggle" plug and sometimes get it to work. That quit after while.

Thanks Terry & Glenn! As I'm researching a bit more, I'm beginning to think that this battery might not be "save-able" & I may have to replace it. I've read online about folks having this same problem, and getting a free replacement battery from Toshiba (if their laptop was still under warranty). Unfortunately, my warranty has expired.
Have you checked the Toshiba website to see if a bios update is available for your model? Seem strange that it stopped working right when you upgraded.

Gee, that sounds like the charge connector on Cheryl's (original) HP "PALM tablet, (now running android 4.2). The connector is so flaky, that if the micro cable is over 4 weeks old, or not supported in the exact right position, it wont charge.
wiggle wiggle..
Sigh.

On Amazon you can get a replacement battery for about $78 shipped - http://www.amazon.com/Powerwarehouse-Toshiba-Satellite-C855D-S5320-Battery/dp/B009XH55ME. It says "100% OEM Compatible - Genuine Toshiba Battery".
Bill - Thanks very much for the link!

You could try Strike Hold, as recommended by http://ourrvadventures.com/2014/10/they-roam-in-packs/ to renew the contacts.
I had to replace the battery. When I put in the new battery, it started charging right away.
