I have noticed very few threads disappearing over the last year and those always involved someone saying something offensive or mean. I think Terry does a great job monitoring the content personally.

Everyone has a opinion. Offensive and mean to one.. is not to others..
Too much politics here to work through.. I'm not one to suck up.. so my posts don't get deleted.. or worse..
Step on this guys toes.. it's mean or rude.. state a fact that coontridicts the other guy.. now I don't know anything and I should not give advice.. Gotton PM's to that effect here..
State a opinion on anything that people are afraid to discuss.. get deleted..
I guess only the few leaders are here.. the rest follow, or get out.. I get it. This should be a club. Not a fourm. I think I am just figuring this place out. I'm slow learner.

When all posts are sweeter than molasses this forum is very boring. I am a crotchety opinionated old lady and I appreciate controversy. Mean, insulting or personal attacks are beyond the pale but differences of opinion should be welcome. Sometimes it's a fine line that divides one from the other. I have noticed that some of our more interesting members are not posting.

In your house, you get to decide what conduct is appropriate. I'm comfortable with that. If it were my house (read my forum) I would have my rules. We are all guests to one degree or another in Howard and Linda's house. They have asked Gene and Terry to assist in moderating the content here. At any time, any one of them can exercise their judgement as to any content posted, such is their right. If H&L determine that their appointees are too heavyhanded they will take action as they see fit. I don't see any evidence of that so far. Some personalities on here appear to think they have the right to say whatever they want as if they were Constitutionally endowed to free speech wherever they wish. Such is not the case. If I invited you to my house and you conducted yourself in a manner that I found inappropriate you could be asked to leave or, most certainly, not be invited again unless evidence of redemption was evident. If that was important to you, you would make the necessary effort to amend your behavior. Isn't that reasonable to expect?
Howard & Linda's guidlines for posting and general conduct in their house/forum are reasonable and fair and most importantly, THEIR choice. I'm glad the forum is moderated... unmoderated forums, and there are plenty of them, remind me so much of current "reality" TV offerings, so much selfish shouting and rudeness and so little compassion and understanding. Definitely not my cup of tea.
In life, if you want to be heard, first you must listen. If you want to be respected, first you must be respectful. If you want to lead, first you must follow.

Again, I agree that the moderators do a good job here. If anyone wants a suggestion on places for political debate or extreme political debate, pm me as I know a couple, one isn't moderated at all but you need extremely thick skin since you are on your own there and the other covers many subjects, politics and great debates and that is where I go to debate but, frankly, because I like the last word, visiting those keep me up at night thinking about my next point so I have started limiting my visits there to get some sleep to pursue my RV dream. It is very hard to find websites where you can get support for whatever your needs are and not be attacked, belittled or made fun of because either you aren't like everyone else coming out of a mold or you aren't yet educated and/or experienced enough to ask the right questions, etc.
It might be helpful to read through "Guidelines and Suggestions" at the beginning of the page.

Howard and Linda, Terry and Gene do a good job keeping things relevant...
I enjoy a good political tussle but I know th e forums for this and go there for that ....and this or any of the RV forums will not tolerate it....

We are Christian and I will close a subject many times with "Thank you and God bless". I have had posts edited and they deleted this closing. So even good intentions can be considered taboo on some forums.

There is a fine line that must be walked, for the benefit of all, threads staying on topic is very important in terms of building a good foundation of information that we can all benefit from....As far as the political stuff there are many Forums that offer that, and since people are so passionate about politics they will generally go off on a tangent completely derailing the original intent of the thread...Arguing and fighting.....This is the Grey area , spirited discussion is welcome, disagreeing is fine, but when things begin to turn disrespectful , there are other Forums available for that...We all consider different things to be disrespectful, some of us have thick skin, others not so thick, for this reason everyones definition is different , you can't please everyone...I am not a fan of editing threads, There is nothing wrong with "Thankyou and God Bless" if that has been edited out intentionally I would bring it the attention of Howard, I think if it was deleted, it was done accidentally but I don't know.....In closing the only things I keep an eye out for as a moderator are, Staying on Topic, and Respect.......and of coarse Spam......

I recently deleted the "Land Of The Not So Free" thread. I deleted it not because of the subject matter about House Bill HR 5204, but because of the call to take a position on the legislation AND because the discussion got off topic (like so many others) AND because some folks used the thread just to complain about how this Forum is run and moderated.
Brian and Gene have said it well. Though this Forum is open to the public, it is not a "public forum", it's a private forum that we pay for. Access is free and open; however, we have established guidelines and standards and Gene and Terry do a terrific job of trying to enforce those standards without squelching open discussion. There is certainly a fine line, and it is difficult to moderate a Forum that is open to everyone. We are actually much more lenient on some things than other Forums, but we are also more strict in other areas. It works and we've only had to ban one or two people in the eight years this Forum has been open.
Clearly, some of you have not read our "Guidelines And Suggestions" or you choose to ignore them and then complain when we try to enforce them. Most, not all but most, of our deletions are because a post or a portion of a post has absolutely nothing to do with the original topic OR someone hi-jacks the thread to start a related, but different, discussion. The quality of the Forum is diluted when people are trying to find information and have to trudge through irrelevant posts.
We do try to stay away from politics and religion here, and again there is a fine line and it's a judgment call. For what it's worth, we have no problem with "Thank You and God Bless" as a sign-off or in a signature line. And we're more tolerant of general government/tax comments, but we don't allow political party or individual politician comments or assumptions that we are all in the same religious or political camp. People are going to disagree with our judgment calls from time to time, but we're still going to make them as we see fit.
And yes, we do have a higher standard regarding tone and respect. If you haven't read the thread entitled "Welcome! We Do Things A Little Differently Here", I would invite you to read it. Here's an excerpt:
Here, we don't tolerate the rudeness and snarkiness that is allowed in other forums. And though we encourage differences in ideas and opinions, we try to make sure those differences are expressed in ways that are diplomatic and respectful of each other. We all have natural reactions and judgments about things we see and read, and we all come from very diverse backgrounds with diverse values. So, what we ask of our members is simply to be polite, positive, and thoughtful in the way views are expressed and to keep judgments that add no value out of the conversation.
To be sure, we understand there is a level of over-sensitivity in our society, and there are people that are offended by everything. But we promote this Forum as a safe place, and while we can't expect to keep every person from ever being offended, we can do a lot better than several of the other forums out there, and our goal is simply to be the best AND friendliest RV Forum on the web.
Thanks for coming and for helping us continue to strive for that goal.
P.S. If you don't think you can adhere to our higher standards, we'd prefer you just view the Forum and not become a member. If you do become a member and expect to behave in a way we don't condone, understand that we may send you a gentle reminder, or we may ask you to leave, or we may just delete your account without notice.
Now, I won't be deleting this thread, but I am closing it. If you want to comment on this post, feel free to send me a private message.
