My wife and I are intending to buy a MH and the question has come up of State Residence. We are French and live in France but we are accustomed to rent each year a RV in USA for at least one month. We have been doing that the last 14 years. As in a few month we will become "young" retirees we would like to buy a used RV and spend 3 to 6 months (maybe more) per year in USA, hitting the roads.
So I guess we need to select a home base somewhere in USA in order to have the vehicle licensing and registration there.
I'm wondering if it would be possible to buy a MH in one State, pay the sales taxes in another one (a State that is most beneficial for us) and have the vehicle licensing and registration in that State. Any other advises would be very appreciated. Thank you in advance Best Jacky

You can buy in one state and register it in your "home" state or as we call it "your state of legal residence." Normally, this must be done within a certain time limit such as 30 days. You must pay sales tax in the state you register it (state of legal residence). Each state charges different taxes and each has certain requirements for you to become a legal resident. One state may require you to have a residence or property there to be a resident. Others, may only require you to have a driver's license. A few states have no sales tax (Oregon, New Hampshire). Some people think they can buy in a state with zero sales tax and register the vehicle there rather than their state of legal residence and swap it over later. It doesn't work. The state of legal residence will check to see how much sales tax was paid and they will collect the difference.
I am not sure of the legalities for a foreign national to establish legal residence in a state or if there are separate provisions for registering your RV. The way to research this is search for "state name" then "department of motor vehicles" or "DMV" and look for web sites with .gov at the end. For instance: www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/Pages/index.aspx

I would suggest Florida or South Dakota if you are using an international drivers lic.......those will be the 2 easiest to work with an RV type address.
