Hi all, Rudee and I are working at the Crazy Horse Memorial near Custer , SD this summer and wanted to let anyone who happens to be in the area know of a very special event coming up this week end. Crazy Horse is having their annual Volksmarch to the top of the monument this Saturday and Sunday. This is a chance for you to walk out onto the arm of the monument and up to the very face of Crazy Horse that has been/is being carved. The face is completed and it is a very impressive site that is normally not accessible to the general public.
The Volksmarch Assoc. does charge a very small fee to register and participate, $3 per walker, however the entrance fee for Crazy Horse is just a simple donation of three cans of food per person for our food drive. All the food collected is donated to the local "Feed South Dakota" food pantry. Once you complete the hike the museum, restaurant, Sculptors home/workshop and Native American Cultural Center are all open for you to tour and enjoy. Parking is free as always.
The hike is 6.2 miles through a nice wooded area and up a winding gravel road to the top of the monument. The elevation change from start to finish is around 900' and is a gradual ascent. There will be several rest and refreshment areas along the hike.
The doors open at 7am and you can start your hike anytime between 8am and noon on both Saturday and Sunday. Rudee and I have both been to the top of the mountain and it is a very impressive site, one we will not soon forget. So if you are in the area and looking for a "bucket list" type of of activity consider doing the hike. For those non-hikers you can also enter the museum grounds for the same donation of 3 cans of food per person.

ps: don't forget to bring your camera!

We follow your blog and enjoy hearing of your adventures. We hope to hit the road someday and would like to work in South Dakota. Sounds like a really fun hike but I guess too far from Texas for the weekend.
