My name is Janice and my husband Dennis and I are wannabe Full-Timers! Dennis will retire (God willing) in 2-3 years. We hope to begin our journey at that time. We are educating ourselfs by reading several forums. Through 43 years of marriage we have moved about a dozen times so I really believe we are gypsies at heart!!
Our plan is to buy the truck (f450 dually long bed) next February. Fifth wheel will follow in about 1-1/2 years. We've never owned an RV...although we have camped in a TT...and I've driven a MH from tx to Califrnia! 😨
we are looking at heartland, Solitude, DRV and others...they all seem to have their good points and their problems!
a little about ourselves...dennis has worked in the oil and gas industry for 30 plus years...I raised our daughters then later raised and showed Scottie's. We live in Richmond Texas near one daughter who I help on occasion with grand kids!
we hope to meet many of you in Our future travels! We are planning on attending a rally a year from now

Hello Janice and Dennis,
You're wise to be planning a few years ahead. This is a great place to ask question, or just hang out and soak it all in. You'll LOVE the rally!!!!

Welcome Janice & Dennis. You've joined a great bunch of folks, many with plenty of experience to help guide you. Our adventure in FT RV living doesn't tentatively start until 2019 so, hopefully, you will be a seasoned pro by the time we hit the road and we will add your "on the road expertise" to our knowledge base

Hello. Welcome to the forum. I bought a 5th wheel and was not a previous owner. I learn as the days go by.

Welcome Janice and Dennis,
Everyone I've read on this forum advise picking your RV BEFORE you buy your truck. You can save the money and use it when the right rig for YOU is chosen. You may find you change your minds in the next couple of years. Just my thoughts.

Usually it is best to look for the trailer first and get the truck to fit the trailer, but if the situation calls for transportation before the expenditure on the trailer, I think the f450 is a good choice. Actually a dually of any brand is better than the single rear wheel trucks as it gives you more lattitude in your trailer choice. I am biased towards the f450 as you can see. I pulled our current trailer since 2006 until Labor Day this year with a f350 SRW crew cab but really noticed a difference going to the f450.
Welcome to the forum and good luck in your search.

Thanks everyone for you're very supportive comments! 😊
in response to our future truck purchase...my hubby is a 'ford' guy! We are going to look at the large Ram! Actually it's helpful seeing what everyone else drives and the size of their 5th wheels! I wish more people put their RV's actual length in their personal info! and who knows...maybe the 5er will come first!

I am partial to my Dodge because it is a pulling machine and plenty of truck to pull my 39' fifth wheel. We had a GMC 2500 with the Duramax/Allison combo when we had our Bighorn but bought the Ram just before buying the Landmark. I don't believe you will go wrong with any of the Big 3 trucks and suggest a one ton (350/3500 series) with dual wheels for stability. The Ford and Ram 4500's are great trucks but IMO they are overkill for many of the rigs on the road today. If you're still undecided on your trailer, for the difference in price it might be good peace of mind to go with one.
