Does anyone have a definitive answer to this question: Do you have to register a truck camper?
(And if this has been discussed before, if you could point me in the right direction, I will read about it...)
I have gotten so many different answers, even my town office and the BMV are telling me different things! This is so frustrating. We want to do the right thing, but are finding it very difficult to figure out what that is...
Do you need a special plate for a truck camper (to put on the camper itself...)?
Stickers/decals?
Do you pay Excise tax?
Also, do you need commercial plates on your truck?
I am in Maine, by the way...
THANK YOU so much for any help you can give me! :)

Sue,
First of all, welcome to the RV Dreams forums. It is good to have you as part of the family, so we welcome your questions and comments.
With regards to your question about registering a truck camper, is this one of those that are considered a "slide-in" camper that literally goes into the bed of the truck? If so, I could not find a listing for it at the Maine DMV website Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles: Registrations
They list motorhomes and trailers, but not slide-in campers. If in doubt, the website that the above link goes to has a "contact" link in one paragraph that would let you contact the MBV in Augusta, so I would contact them instead of a local office. I have no idea what Maine would do with trucks, but based on many of the other states, I can't believe they would require commercial tags for a personal camper. However, check that with the Augusta office as well.
Good luck.

Hi Sue and welcome to the forum!
I have a Lance camper, it slides in the back of the truck. In Texas where I live you don't have to register or inspect it.
When I put it on the truck, I move the license plate from the back of the truck to the camper. I do however make sure all the clearance lights are working before leaving on a trip.
