Well, I am probably going to be the "wet blanket" around here because in all the years of our camping, I do not recall ever telling ghost stories. We generally had the tendency to be talking of what we did, planning for future days, and in my case, answering questions for our two sons.
I remember our first week vacation of camping in the mountains with our two young sons. All week long, it seemed that all I heard was, "Dad, I'm bored." That, of course, led to hiking around the national forest campground that became our favorite destination. It was 3 1/2 miles back off of the nearest highway, had lots of trees, and the Purgatoire River ran right through the campgrounds. One could listen to the water running, watch the hummingbirds (and get them to land on one's fingers) and just enjoy the cool and quiet of nature. We were not disappointed in the opportunities to see deer as well, although I was NEVER able to get a picture of many of them, or of the occasional bear that came through.
After the next year went by and we were looking forward to vacation again, I feared that the boys would not like the idea of returning to the mountains because they had "been so bored." One evening, they came to me and asked, "Dad, are we going on vacation this year?" When I replied in the affirmative, they then asked, "Where are we going?" With some trepidation, I answered, "Back to Purgatoire River Campground."
To my great pleasure and joy, they were excited to return there themselves. We continued to return there up until the year of 2006, even though the youngest son was up into his mid-30's. He still likes to join his mom and dad on vacation. We are planning on Colorado Springs for 2 weeks this year, and he plans to fly up to Denver and spend the last week with us at a relative's home.

If you think about it we are all getting older...We used to tell our children with smores now we have moved on to grandchildren. What is the best story you told at a campfire.

I started the thread but got interrupted by my pool boy and landscapers. (can you see why I want out of more payments?).
Starting to get rid of things in the garage I found my daughters old 35mm camera. I took the film in and when I got the pics back I was shocked. With the Mustang club up in TN we used to go to the Bell Witch Cave every year on halloween. The 1st year Ash got mouthy with me and I made the backhand gesture to her to tell her to keep quiet but never hit her. I had my head snap back and pony tail pulled.
Second year I went out... Ashley took her b/f with her and they played kissy face all night long. I pulled her aside and told her that I did not approve and if she continued I would proceed to whoop her behind. Again my hair was pulled. She took pics all night long. But when I developed the film you could clearly see a woman and child in the opening of the cave.

With the Boy Scouts out in the desert around a campfire, we had 6 newbies on their first trip. I'm a big guy so I always had the duty to come running out of the darkness screaming like a banshee to scare the newbies. One of the older scouts will mention that he heard about a couple that were camping in this same area about 10 years ago. The police found their bodies but had no idea how they died or why. The story is that their ghosts roam the area and from time to time are seen by campers. Nothing else is said and the conversation turns to other topics. After about 10 minutes I'd rattle some nearby bushes and do so every 10 or 15 minutes for the next hour or so. Don't worry it's probably a harmless animal searching for food we're safe by the fire. The older scouts let the fire die down telling the others when there's nothing but embers we'll head for the tents. I get a signal from one of the scouts and head at a full run screaming towards one of the newbies from out of the darkness. I wish I had videos of the looks on the newbie's faces....

When I was growing up we went to YMCA summer camp, which had cabins.
Our favorite stunt was to tell the story of Big Foot and how he would swing down from the trees and walk across the roof then jump to the ground and look in the windows, looking for a camper to eat.
This went good until the father that walked the roof was sick and I was elected to do the dirty deed (I had very big feet) anyway all was well until I jumped from the roof, I landed stradled a tree branch and about .scared everyone, including the other fathers, with the loud cry of pain, the kids were wise to what was suppose to happen and thought it was a good yell.
Spent two days in the hospital.

We used to go camping when my daughter was young to Jellystone park. I made the mistake one year to tell a ghost story about a bear. It was their halloween weekend...all the kids got together to take a pic b4 trick or treating. Yogi started to mess with the kids (scruffing up their hair, etc) Ashley turned around and kicked Yogi in the shin and ran. I appologized and told a bear ghost story last night, Yogi gave me the finger!!!

When I was little we always told the ones about the babysitters and "The Hook". But also there is a great series of children's books call Scary To Tell in the Dark, collected by Alvin Shwartz. I loved these as a kid and still to this day I love them. I can't wait till my daughter is old enough for them.
