I found this site a few weeks ago and am very impressed with it and grateful for the knowledge and ideas being shared here.
I retired from the PD up on Long Island, NY in the summer of '11 and came South to get away from the tough Winters and to be closer to the mountains for the great motorcycle roads. We've had a TT since '03 but have only dragged it up and down the coast between Maine and Florida. It's never been West and it's almost time for us to see what the rest of this great country has to offer. We're starting to research different rigs and plan to full time once our youngest is out of college in two years.
My wife and I are avid motorcyclists and taking the bike as well as our dogs is the only plan we're considering.
We're debating between an "A", a fifth wheel toy hauler and a traditional fifth wheel. Each has their pros and cons but I'm betting that with the experience and knowledge here we can figure out exactly what would work best for us.
I'll continue to poke around but we'd love to hear from anyone who travels with a motorcycle.

Welcome to a great group with lots of experience. There are even a few that travel with motorcycles and I'm sure they'll have some good advice for you.

Guy next to me, a full timer/contractor has a 40' toy hauler for his motorcycles. Its nice, haven't seen the inside of it.

Thanks very much for the replies, I appreciate the welcome! From what I've seen so far this is an excellent site frequented by a good bunch of people. We're definitely going to learn some things here - and maybe even be able to answer a question or two for someone else.
Hey Scrappy, I'm only about a 1/2 hour North of Atlanta, it's north georgia but not the real "North Georgia". I head up there on the weekends on the bike though and have been to the Dragon, Cherohala, BRP and just about every other great motorcycle road down here. I used to ride down from NY to hit them - now they're just a day trip :)

I'm as North as it gets. The TN border is maybe three miles from here, and the AL border is about the same. Im squeezed up here in the very corner. Overlooking the beautiful Lookout Mountain.

Welcome to the RV Dreams forums. The folks here have experience with just about every kind of RV that there is out there. Depending on your eventual needs, don't rule out a "super-C" as a possibility. There are even a few folks here with those, one of which is Gene (Genecop). There is at least one other that has a picture of his in the signature area of his posts, but right now "CRS" is preventing me from remembering their username.
Thanks for your service to your community as a part of the police department. You will likely even find others here from the same profession.
Take the time to go to different RV dealerships as well as any RV shows that are available to you. Take your time with looking as you don't want to make an expensive mistake. If you can, also talk to folks in RV parks and campgrounds and glean what information you can from them as well. When looking at rigs, remember that the very foundation of the rigs are made up of the frame, suspension, axles, wheels and tires. Try to make sure that those are good and solid, especially so if you are planning on full-time RV'ing.
Feel free to ask any questions as we all tend to learn from each other, and there are NO "dumb" questions.

I went again today to the local Camping World, so much eye candy there it's incredible. I think the first thing we'll have to do is narrow it down to a type - 5er or motor home, then we can delve deep into the benefits of one model over another.
They of course all look great on the lot but I know from all the time I've spent on our boat (Silverton 34c) that some things will need to be "tweaked" no matter what. I thought our boat was perfect when we first got it and then the "do over" bug takes hold, rewiring, new floors, shelving, bigger holding tanks - I love tinkering with and building things - wonder if I can get all my tools in the basement of the rig, hmmm, lol.
