We'll be closing on the house next week, probably have about 45 days before we finally journey to our new "home state" of SD to set up our domicile. Most of the research I've been doing online seems to indicate that states want you to change addresses within 30 days. Practically speaking due to work and business commitments, we're just not going to leave WA that fast and it appears the week we wanted to arrive in SD is the Sturgis Rally so we've decided to wait another week before arriving, we might be crazy but we're not insane enough to want to share all the local roads with thousands and thousands of motorcyclists who really won't like getting "stuck" behind us.
Just curious how some of you have handled this. I tried changing my DL to our business mailing address which is a PO box through a private company, not the USPS, and the online state DOL site didn't like the new address.
Do we even need to worry about it? Am I concerned over something that is likely not to be a problem?

Thanks Guys!! One less thing to worry about when we've still got way too many little details that are driving us nuts.

You can register your vehicles in advance in SD (your mail forwarding service can help with this remotely). And last I recall, you just need to show up in SD within 90 days to get your driver's license. Just make sure whatever campground you stay at in SD, get a receipt that shows BOTH of your names... I hear way too often of folks getting caught off guard by this when they go to get their DLs.

Physical address problems....oh yea.
After selling our house in July 2012, we got a PO Box here in Wenatchee, WA and started sending out change of addresses. The DOL wouldn't take a PO Box on our driver's license. We used my brother's home address. Same with Bank of America and a Credit Union. Then my brother started getting junk mail in our name. Especially Discover Card offers. Even blank 'cash advance' checks for our B of A credit card! I changed everything to my physical work address and they started getting the junk mail too. We set up our 'permanent' address through Americas Mailbox in SD and sent out change of addresses again. We won't change our DL till August when we go there and will also get our rigs licensed there at that time. Still having trouble with B of A. I changed our Checking and CC accounts, but for some reason our 'main' account won't take the SD address. Thinking about going to USAA. My financial advisor is LPL Financial and can not use the SD address either. I am still using my brother's address for that one till we get to SD and visit a branch office there. We watch our PO Box here in Wenatchee and make sure all legit mail gets changed to our SD mail service. When we head out for good in Sept, we will not be forwarding the PO Box. They can keep all the paper spam.

Allan - We'll be driving, leaving the Couer d'Alene ID area on Aug. 3rd, Sturgis Rally ends the 11th so we're planning to arrive on the 12th and then take care of the DL and vehicle registrations that week. Then we'll be headed to California for a few art shows in Sept/Oct.

Allen - PM me if you want to borrow a car. We'll have both vehicles, no reason for you to rent a car if we're all staying in the same location, I bet I could even get Dale to pick you up from the airport and then talk him into firing up the grill for dinner one night!!!
