Since it looks like we'll be more limited on space than we thought, we're considering folding bikes. We've managed to sell our tandem and our mountain bikes so we have a good replacement fund to start with in our search. Any recommendations or any brands to avoid? We like to ride paved trails, don't mind city streets too much, but have gotten past the point where we need the thrill (and scares) of really steep mountain bike terrain.

Ruth,
Used the "Search" function for this one. Of several threads that came up, this was the only one with any real information.
We have two 20" folding bikes we got from Camping World. We are not avid bikers, but they work well for us around campgrounds. Six speed gearing more than adequate for our needs. Never really took them over any distance so experience is limited.

Thanks for the info everyone. We love riding paved trails and don't mind street riding if traffic is not too heavy. We're going to test ride a few of the folding bikes the day after our house closes, I'm trying to be open minded but as I look at these I'm not sure I would have wanted to ride one up the Mammoth Lakes ride we did last year, 1800 feet elevation in 5 miles and we used every single one of the low gears that we had on our old bikes and coming down hill, well we really tested the brakes and our nerves! Now, we don't always ride trails like that one, but I want the option to be open to us if we want to try another trail like that again. We love the mountains and even the paved trails are generally not real flat so I was concerned about the lack of gears.

Take a look at http://www.2ksilver.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=21. Friends have these folding bikes and like them.
