I used to use a commercial drain cleaner like Draino. And no it won't harm the plumbing in your RV. I did drain and flush the gray tank afterwards so there wasn't any cleaner sitting in contact with the drain valve though.
i have found something that works better though. It's called a ZipIT and costs three dollars or so. It's available in most hardware stores. You can see it here http://www.zipitclean.com/

Our shower is draining slow. what do you all use to keep it flowing properly? We have a liquid holding tank treatment called RV Digest-It but it doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions?

Remove the stopper and clear the" rat ball" clog that hangs from the cross ....the zip it is the best way to do it like Clay said and that normally will solve it

Sounds like your problem is not in the tank, but in the shower drain. Like others have said Zip it.

If you use a commercial drain cleaner in your RV.......Immediately drain and flush the holding tank be sure to have safety glasses and protective wear available before doing it
Drain products are Caustic and create very harmful fumes
Most people assume its ok to do it in an rv because it works at home.........you do not drain your septic at home nor do you under normal circumstances ever come in contact with it ,so you are about to put yourself in contact with something that can hurt you and is hazardous.
Please read the label before dumping it in....Realize that the manufacturer is not taking into account that you are in an RV not in a residential home and that changes the whole picture!!

Zip-It times 2....
Our slow shower drain is always due to a hair clog caught on the cross that is a few inches below the drain screen. Pop out the drain screen and you'll see the clog. You can get to it with a screwdriver but the Zip-It works best.

Thanks everybody. It was certainly a clog in the shower drain. Not sure why we didn't think of that before. that is what we would have done in our house. I think sometimes we think we might break the RV!! I will look for that Zip-It though.

It's just rude that you ask a perfectly legitimate question and everybody kept telling you to zip it! It just isn't like the people on this forum to be like that! Harumph

MarkS: We just don't want the forum clogged up like the drain.

Man....
....what did I do with that ruler?
(And, I think all the ones that need it are old enough to know how it would be applied.)
