We are newbies that have purchased a Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel Longbed and are planning on buying the hitch for our as-yet-to-be-purchased fifth wheel. There are so many to choose from we could use some advise from experienced folks. Are there any suggestions or a website to go to that isn't just trying to sell their brand.

Rod,
One brand that has a good reputation for good quality is the Reese brand. When we had our 26-foot fifth wheel, we had a Reese 16K model. Now, with a much heavier and longer fifth wheel, we have a Reese 22K model.
If you want one that will give air ride smoothness, look into Trailersaver fifth wheel hitches. They aren't cheap, but if your fifth wheel doesn't have any air ride suspension or pin box, the air hitches work very well. Trailersaver also has an excellent reputation.

Rod,
X2 on Terry's comments on the Reese and Trailersaver hitches. Our rig has the TSLB2H hitch and it allows us to adjust on the fly as we are driving how stiff the hitch is depending on the road conditions. They make different models for different applications. Overall you are probably looking at double the cost of a Reese hitch installed but well worth it and you will notice the difference no matter what the tow vehicle. Also if any of this matters, on the Reese hitches, the parent company, Cequent, is moving the Reese plant to Mexico. Trailersaver is made in Kentucky.
Good Luck,
Les

rod, google b&w hitches. we have a gooseneck set-up and it's real easy to flip the ball over to have full use of the bed of your truck, for golf clubs, flea market items,etc..... it's a pretty good ride too! cost for b&w frame mounted ball and gooseneck attachment is about $1000, installed, and have it done by the people you buy the attachments from. i had a local trailer supply company install it for liability protection. mark

We have a B&W but instead of using the gooseneck we have a 5th plate. It also is removal the same as the gooseneck ball leaving the truck free of any obstruction's. It pulls great we are really happy with our B&W.

I also use the B & W hitch, with a gooseneck that's rated for 24k and love this. After you unload the 5th wheel I can remove the ball in the truck and have full use of my bed if needed. It really all depends on your personal taste. I just like being able to use my bed, which I have a 95 gallon diesel take and a tool box that butts right up to the extra tank, and I still have room in the bed. I also use air shocks to help Witt he ups and downs.

We have owned 3 Trailer Savers, 2 TK 3's and the TSLB2H all were and are great. I highly recommend the Trailer Saver and your 5th wheel will also love you. I have owned the B&W, with the Companion 5th wheel hitch, Reese, and Valley/Huskey. The B&W system was the best steel hitch we have owned. However the weight compacity wasn't enough for the 38' Mobile Suites. So we went back to the Trailer Saver. The TS's are pricey, but so is you Truck and 5th wheel. And the TS can be used in most all bedrails. The TSLB2H was mounted on flat steel.. But I think that TS has changed that. I recommend you call TS and talk to the Tech and let them explain their system, and from time to time they will ship free and give 6 months no interest. I also remove my TS when not being used. And when I need to haul something I have two different equipment trailers. I Haul only the extra fuel tank and when towing the 5th wheel I install the TS. Good Luck on you choice. Happy Trails..
