My daughter was getting something out from the under bed storage and didn't have a grip of it when she lifted, I think one of the the gas filled struts over-extended. At any rate, it won't compress again. I just unscrewed one end of it from the frame so I could get the lid down. Is there some trick that I can't figure out to get this thing to work again? Or do I just need to buy a new one?

It sounds like your RV manufacturer used the cheap "gas props" that are all-in-one. I don't know how to fix one that is overextended and the idea that it overextended tells me just how cheap it was. When you replace it get real gas prop brackets and choose an appropriate size of prop. Examples at Camping World, http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/product/gas-props/1674 , but you can get them at some auto parts and/or hardware stores. Gas props come in a length and pound rating, how long is the prop and how much weight can it hold. The props in my RV are very strong and would take a lot of strength to overextend.

I had a gas strut under our bed which came loose, it had ripped out the screws holding it to the plywood platform. I tried to push it back but couldn't, I figured it was shot so I took it out. I went to an auto supply store to get a replacement and the parts guy said it looked OK to him so he tested it by placing the end of the extended ram on the floor and pushed down and it retracted like it should. He told me it takes a lot of pressure, mine was 80 lbs. to make it work. I replaced it under the bad, new screw holes, and it has worked fine since.

Hope this helps.
