The internet is great. My 93 year old dad lives and RVs with us. He suffers from dementia and has a catheter due to an enlarged prostate. I have found two miracle remedies.
I saw an article about coconut oil helping to improve the cognitive function of people with alzheimers & dementia. I started giving him 2 tablespoons of pure coconut oil in the morning and another two with his dinner at night. Sure enough it helped perk him up. The twinkle in his eyes returned and he was more responsive when we talked. The caregivers at the adult day care center also noticed a difference in him, more talkative, more alert, responds better. He nows seems like the dad we had about 5 years ago. It has to be pure coconut oil which can be found at health food stores and some grocery stores (Lou Ana brand at the grocery store).
He suffered frequently from urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to his catheter. Again I saw an article on the internet showing the benefits of using D-Mannose to stop and prevent UTIs. For two years after he first got his catheter about every other month I would have to take him to the emrgency room because he would be unresponsive. Each time it turned out he had a UTI. They would give him antibiotics, the UTI would clear up quickly and he would be back to normal within a day. I started using D-Mannose and he rarely gets a UTI. When he does get a UTI all I have to do is increase the amount of D-Mannose and the UTI goes away within a day. D-Mannose is a type of sugar derived from Birch trees. Eventhough it is a sugar it is treated differently by your body and can be used by diabetics Note: Check with your DR. The articles I've read have all indicated it is safe for use by diabetics. The key to using D-Mannose is to use a high dosage when you have or feel a UTI coming on. I give my dad three capsules daily when no UTI. If he has a UTI or seems like maybe getting one, I will give him 5 capsules in the morning and 5 before he goes to bed. I haven't had to take him to the emergency room in over two years.
If you suffer from UTIs try D-Mannose, you can get it at nutrition or health food stores or online.
If you have someone with alzheimers or dementia give the coconut oil a try. It takes a couple of weeks to begin seeing a difference.

I'd read the reports about pure coconut oil as well. Glad to hear someone tried it and is seeing improvements! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. Very good info.
To add another internet sourced remedy...
Peppermint oil capsules for IBS or just that upset tummy some of us get with stress, etc. Kevin used to get stomach cramps after over half the times he ate anything... no real pattern to say, "don't eat that." I saw an article on the internet that said peppermint oil was the fix. After lots of searching I finally found them on Amazon.com under the brand "Heather's Tummy Tamers." Dosage says 1-2 capsules up to 1 hour before each meal. He started taking 1 before each meal. Instant relief! After about a month he is down to 1 capsule each morning and sometimes one more in the evening. Almost no more tummy problems. Just be sure to find the capsules because straight peppermint oil is to hard on the esophagus and stomach.

Peppermint oil also works to keep rodents away. Sprinkle some in the storage comparments and areas where you have seen the critters.
